JLPT N1 Key Grammar — The Points That Come Up Most
This page is for anyone a few weeks out from the N1 exam who doesn't have time to go back through all 100 or so grammar points. It picks the 40 that turn up most in the grammar and reading sections — and that are easiest to mix up with a near-synonym — groups them by function (time, limits, concession, conditions, cause, inevitability, judgement…), and gives each one its connection, meaning and a short example, linked to the lesson that covers it in full. After that come the 10 most confused sets, 7 exam tips and a 10-question self-test.
For every grammar point, see the N1 grammar list; to review lesson by lesson, the N1 overview and the Lesson 92 N1 review; to drill, the N1 practice questions.

Exam Tips
- Read the main clause first — it rules out half the options. No volition, commands or requests after: や否や, なり, はおろか, とあって, をよそに. Must be followed by a negative: たりとも, をおいて, なくして(は). Volition or requests are fine after: 次第, とあれば, はもとより. In the sentence-grammar items, the half after the blank usually settles the answer more than the half before it.
- Then check the connection — classical conjugations are the commonest trap. Nai-stem + ん: んがため (せんがため), んばかり (せんばかり); nai-stem + ず: ずにはおかない, ずとも (せずとも); dict. form + べく (すべく), べくもない, べからず; volitional + (よ)うが, (よ)うにも. When you see 「する」, ask whether it should become 「せ」 or 「す」.
- Memorise the fixed collocations. 想像にかたくない, 言うまでもない, 望むべくもない, 見るに堪えない, 取るに足りない, 光栄の至り, 割れんばかりの拍手, 何人たりとも, 昔ながらの, 家族ぐるみ — you'll spot these in the options at a glance, no analysis needed.
- Check the direction of the judgement and the person. Essentially positive only: ならでは, をおいて, あっての. Mostly negative: 極まりない, はおろか, たら最後. Criticising others: ともあろう者が, にかこつけて. The speaker's own feelings only: 限りだ, を禁じ得ない. Third person only: なり.
- In ★ ordering questions, join the "fixed partners" first. 「をおいて」 → 「ほかに〜ない」; 「はおろか」 → 「〜も/さえ」; 「ないまでも」 → 「せめて」; 「Aといい」 → 「Bといい」; 「一 + counter」 → 「たりとも」 → negative. Once that chunk is in place, the rest usually fits only one way.
- The options often include N2 and N3 near-synonyms. 次第, ものの, はもとより, ずにはいられない, に基づいて may be distractors — or the right answer. Don't assume the hardest-looking option is correct.
- In text grammar, read the whole paragraph first. Editorials and commentary favour written judgements: てしかるべきだ, を余儀なくされる, にかたくない, でなくてなんだろう. Decide whether the writer is criticising, speculating or marvelling before choosing the sentence ending. Don't sink too much time into grammar; leave it for reading (time allocation is in the December JLPT exam guide).

Answers
- c — The curtain and the audience are different subjects, and a one-off past fact follows; なり needs one subject, そばから is for repeated events, and 次第 can't take a past fact.
- a — 「をおいて」 pairs with 「ほかに〜ない」: "no one but him".
- d — 「一 + counter + たりとも + negative」: not a single yen can be wasted.
- b — 「〜ばよかった」 + ものを expresses regret and reproach; ものの is just a neutral "although".
- c — A long weekend is a special occasion and the main clause describes an observed scene, so とあって; とあれば is hypothetical and takes the speaker's will.
- b — "If it's for my children" with the speaker's resolve after it: とあれば.
- d — An outside circumstance (the typhoon) forced the cancellation, and a noun (中止) comes before it: を余儀なくされる.
- a — The set phrase 「想像にかたくない」 ("not hard to imagine"); までもない takes a verb dict. form (想像するまでもない) and means something else anyway.
- c — Shock and criticism at unworthy behaviour that actually happened, ending in 「〜とは」: ともあろう者が.
- d — A na-adjective stem takes 極まりない directly; 限りだ is for the speaker's own feelings (うれしい限り, 寂しい限り), not for criticising others; ならでは is for praise only ("unique to…") and can't follow 「失礼」.
