Limits & Scope — をおいて〜ない/ならでは/にとどまらず/はおろか/もさることながら/に限ったことではない/を限りに
This lesson covers grammar for limits and scope. 「をおいて〜ない」 and 「ならでは」 narrow things down to a single one — "nobody/nothing but A" and "only A can offer this" — and both carry high praise. 「にとどまらず」, 「はおろか」 and 「もさることながら」 start from A and widen the range to B, each with its own tone: 「にとどまらず」 is a range spreading outward, 「はおろか」 is "not even B, let alone A", and 「もさることながら」 is "A is good, but B stands out even more". 「に限ったことではない」 comes at the end of a sentence and says a phenomenon isn't limited to A; 「を限りに」 marks a point in time after which something stops. They overlap in meaning with 「に限らず」, 「はもとより」, 「のみならず」 and 「どころか」 from N3 and N2, and the differences between them are exactly what the N1 test likes to ask about.

1. 〜をおいて〜ない ~wo oite ~nai (Nobody/nothing but…)
Conjugation
- Noun + をおいて(ほかに)〜ない
- Common frame: 「〜できるのは、Aをおいてほかにいない/ない」
※ In kanji 「おいて」 is 「措いて」, "to set aside" — set A aside and there is nothing else. The main clause is always negative: 「ない」, 「いない」, 「考えられない」 and the like.
Meaning
"Nobody but A", "there's no one/nothing other than A". The speaker sees A as the only suitable one, the only one who can do it — high praise.
Restrictions:
- For high praise: A is "the one and only". It can't be a neutral exclusion: ❌ 「田中さんをおいて、全員出席した」 (for a plain "except" use 「を除いて」).
- Not for negative things: △ 「遅刻するのは彼をおいてほかにいない」 sounds sarcastic and isn't normally said.
- The main clause must be negative: ❌ 「彼をおいて適任だ」.
- 「何をおいても」 is a set phrase meaning "before anything else", a different use.
Example Sentences
- この難しい交渉を任せられるのは、彼をおいてほかにいない。(He is the only person who could be trusted with these difficult negotiations.)
- 日本の近代文学を代表する作家といえば、夏目漱石をおいてほかにないだろう。(If you're talking about the writer who represents modern Japanese literature, it can only be Natsume Sōseki.)
- 制度の改革に踏み切るなら、今をおいてほかに機会はない。(If we're going to commit to reforming the system, there will be no better chance than now.)
- この難病の手術ができる医師は、国内では山田教授をおいていないと言われている。(It's said that in this country, nobody but Professor Yamada can perform surgery for this rare disease.)
- 次の大会の開催地としては、交通の便がいいこの町をおいて考えられない。(As the venue for the next tournament, this town, with its good transport links, is the only one that comes to mind.)
Comparison
| Expression | Meaning | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| をおいて〜ない | nobody/nothing but A | High praise; A is the only choice; the main clause is always negative |
| を除いて | except A | Neutral exclusion; the main clause needn't be negative |
| 以外(に)〜ない | nothing except A | Neutral; speech or writing; no built-in praise |
❌ 田中さんをおいて、全員出席した。
⭕ 田中さんを除いて、全員出席した。(Everyone came except Tanaka.)
⭕ この役が務まるのは、田中さんをおいてほかにいない。(Nobody but Tanaka could carry this role.)
「何をおいても」= before anything else: 「帰国したら、何をおいてもまず両親に会いに行きたい」 (when I get back home, the first thing I want to do is go and see my parents).

2. 〜ならでは(の) ~nara dewa (no) (Unique to… / Only… could…)
Conjugation
- Noun + ならではの + noun
- Noun + ならではだ
- Noun + ならでは〜ない (older style: 「この味は老舗ならでは出せない」 only an old shop could produce this flavour)
※ 「ならではな」 is wrong.
Meaning
"Unique to A", "something only A can offer". A feature or strength belongs to A alone and can't be found elsewhere — said with admiration. A is usually a person, place, group, season or a way of doing things (handmade, live broadcast…).
Restrictions:
- Basically for positive evaluation: ⭕ 「京都ならではの風情」. You will also hear it for problems peculiar to A (「都会ならではの悩み」), but on the test treat it as positive.
- A must really be special; for an ordinary feature anyone has it sounds odd: △ 「この店ならではの安さ」 only works if the shop's prices are genuinely in a class of their own.
- It doesn't attach to verbs: ❌ 「行くならではの」.
Example Sentences
- 老舗旅館ならではの細やかなもてなしに、海外からの客も感激していた。(Even guests from abroad were moved by the attentive hospitality only a long-established inn can offer.)
- 旅の楽しみの一つは、その土地ならではの料理を味わうことだ。(One of the joys of travel is tasting food you can only get in that particular place.)
- 子どもならではの自由な発想に、大人たちは驚かされた。(The adults were amazed by the kind of free thinking only children have.)
- 一つ一つ手作業で仕上げられた器には、手作りならではの温かみがある。(These dishes, each finished by hand, have a warmth that only handmade things have.)
- 細部にまでこだわり抜いた演出は、さすがベテラン監督ならではだ。(Direction this meticulous, right down to the details, is something only a veteran director could pull off.)
Comparison
| Expression | Meaning | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| ならではの | unique to A | Stresses that nothing else has it |
| らしい | typical of A; A-like | Fits A's typical image; no "nowhere else" claim |
| だけあって | as you'd expect of A | Gives a reason: because it's A, … (N2 Lesson 60) |
「手作りならではの温かみ」= a warmth only handmade things have (no other method gives it)
「子どもらしい絵」= a very childlike picture (fits what children are like)
「プロだけあって、さすがに上手だ」= he's a pro, so of course he's good (cause and effect)
On the test, if the blank is followed by 「の + noun」, comes after a distinctive noun (a place, an old shop, handmade, Japan…) and the sentence is praising that quality, pick 「ならではの」.

3. 〜にとどまらず ~ni todomarazu (Not stopping at… / Going beyond…)
Conjugation
- Noun + にとどまらず
- Verb dictionary form + にとどまらず
※ 「とどまる」 means "to stay within"; 「にとどまらず」 is "not staying within A but spreading to a wider B". The main clause often has 「〜にまで」, 「〜にも」, 「〜まで及ぶ」 or 「〜広がる」.
Meaning
"Not stopping at A (but reaching B)". A is a range, field or stage, and things go beyond it into the wider B. Works for good and bad things alike; typical of news and commentary.
Restrictions:
- A must be something you can see as a range (an area, a field, a stage, an activity), and B is wider: ⭕ 「国内にとどまらず海外にも」.
- When you're just naming one example of a category, 「に限らず」 is more natural: △ 「彼は野菜にとどまらず、肉も嫌いだ」 (A isn't a limit being exceeded here; say 「野菜に限らず」 or 「野菜だけでなく」).
- The main clause describes facts or judgments; commands and requests are unusual.
Example Sentences
- 地震の被害は県内にとどまらず、近隣の県にまで及んだ。(The earthquake damage didn't stop at the prefecture; it reached neighbouring prefectures too.)
- 彼女の作品は国内にとどまらず、海外でも高く評価されている。(Her work is highly regarded not just at home but abroad as well.)
- 気候変動は一国の問題にとどまらず、地球規模で取り組むべき課題だ。(Climate change is not just one country's problem; it's an issue that has to be tackled on a global scale.)
- この会社は製品を販売するにとどまらず、購入後のサポートにも力を入れている。(This company doesn't stop at selling its products; it also puts a lot into after-sales support.)
- 物価の上昇は食料品にとどまらず、電気代やガス代など生活全般に広がっている。(Rising prices aren't confined to food; they've spread to every part of life, from electricity to gas bills.)
Comparison
| Expression | Meaning | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| にとどまらず | not stopping at A (spreading to B) | A is a range; stresses spreading beyond it |
| に限らず | not limited to A | A is just one example of a category, B the other members (N3 Lesson 41) |
| のみならず | not only A but B | Formal "not only… but"; can also follow a clause (N2 Lesson 62) |
「被害は県内にとどまらず、隣の県にまで及んだ」= the damage spread from the prefecture to the next one (a range spreading out)
「この店は週末に限らず、平日も混んでいる」= the shop is busy not only at weekends but on weekdays too (weekends are just one example)
They are often interchangeable, but 「にとどまらず」 has a sense of crossing a boundary and spreading, which is why 「にまで」, 「及ぶ」 or 「広がる」 so often follow it.

4. 〜はおろか ~wa oroka (Let alone… / Not to mention…)
Conjugation
- Noun + はおろか、〜も/さえ/すら/まで〜
- Common frame: 「Aはおろか、Bも〜ない」
※ In kanji 「おろか」 is 「疎か」 — "(mentioning A) falls far short".
Meaning
"Not even B, let alone A". A is the bigger or harder thing, B the more basic one: if even B can't happen, A is out of the question. The speaker sounds surprised, dissatisfied or resigned.
Restrictions:
- The main clause is usually negative or undesirable: ⭕ 「漢字はおろか、ひらがなも読めない」. A positive "even…" use also occurs (「国内はおろか海外にまで名が知られている」), but it's less common than the negative one.
- No volition, command or request in the main clause: ❌ 「平日はおろか、週末も練習しなさい」 (use 「はもとより」 here).
- The main clause normally has 「も/さえ/すら/まで」 to answer it.
Example Sentences
- 祖父は足を悪くしてから、旅行はおろか、近所への散歩さえできなくなった。(Since my grandfather's legs got bad, he can't even walk around the neighbourhood, let alone travel.)
- 繁忙期に入ると、休日はおろか、睡眠時間すら満足に取れない。(Once the busy season starts, I can't even get enough sleep, never mind days off.)
- 新入社員の彼は、敬語はおろか、基本的なあいさつもまともにできない。(The new hire can't even manage basic greetings properly, let alone honorific language.)
- 事故の直後、彼は会社の名前はおろか、自分の名前すら思い出せなかった。(Right after the accident he couldn't even remember his own name, let alone his company's.)
- その村には、病院はおろか、コンビニ一軒もない。(That village doesn't have a single convenience store, let alone a hospital.)
Comparison
| Expression | Meaning | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| はおろか | not even B, let alone A | Written; main clause usually negative; no volition or command |
| どころか | not even B, let alone A; far from A, actually B | Fine in speech; also has the "quite the opposite" use (N3 Lesson 39) |
| はもとより | A goes without saying, and B too | Usually positive; can take volition and requests (N2 Lesson 62) |
❌ 平日はおろか、週末も練習しよう。
⭕ 平日はもとより、週末も練習しよう。(Let's practise at weekends as well as on weekdays, of course.)
A use only 「どころか」 has: 「涼しくなるどころか、ますます暑くなった」 (far from cooling down, it got even hotter) — 「はおろか」 can't replace it here.
「はおろか」 follows a noun, while 「どころか」 can also follow verbs and adjectives — watch the form too.

5. 〜もさることながら ~mo saru koto nagara (A is one thing, but B even more…)
Conjugation
- Noun + もさることながら
※ 「さる」 is 「然る」 ("being so"); 「さることながら」 means "that's true enough, but…". Written style, common in speeches, reviews and advertising.
Meaning
"A is one thing, but B is even more…". The speaker grants A and then shifts the weight onto B, which is the real point. A and B are usually different aspects of one thing (taste and presentation, technique and expression…).
Restrictions:
- The focus is on B: the main clause is often an evaluation like 「〜が素晴らしい」, 「〜が重要だ」 or 「〜によるところが大きい」 that singles B out.
- Mostly for positive or neutral evaluation: △ 「値段もさることながら、品質の悪さにがっかりした」 does occur but isn't typical.
- Unlike 「はもとより」, A isn't the "obviously included" item; it's the one that is "fine too, but not the point".
Example Sentences
- この店の料理は、味もさることながら、盛り付けの美しさが際立っている。(The food here tastes good, of course, but what really stands out is how beautifully it's presented.)
- 就職先を選ぶ際は、給与もさることながら、職場の人間関係も重要だ。(When choosing where to work, pay matters, but relationships in the workplace are just as important.)
- 彼女の演奏は、技術もさることながら、その豊かな表現力で聴く者を魅了する。(Her technique is one thing, but it's the richness of her expression that captivates listeners.)
- 今回の優勝は、選手たちの努力もさることながら、監督の的確な指示によるところが大きい。(The players' hard work played its part in this win, but it owes even more to the coach's precise instructions.)
- この映画は、ストーリーもさることながら、映像の美しさで高い評価を得ている。(The story is good, but it's the beauty of its visuals that has won this film such high praise.)
Comparison
| Expression | Meaning | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| もさることながら | A is one thing, but B even more | On B; A is only acknowledged |
| はもとより | A goes without saying, and even B | On "even B"; A is taken for granted (N2 Lesson 62) |
| はもちろん | of course A, and B too | Same as 「はもとより」, more conversational (N3 Lesson 46) |
「彼は歌もさることながら、ダンスが素晴らしい」= his singing is good, but his dancing is even better (the dancing is the point)
「彼は歌はもとより、ダンスも上手だ」= he sings well, naturally, and he dances well too (how wide his talent is)
On the test, when the main clause is an evaluation that singles out B (「〜が素晴らしい」, 「〜が大きい」) and B takes 「が」 rather than 「も」, the answer is almost always 「もさることながら」. It also works when B takes 「も」 (example 2); then decide by whether the weight falls on B.

6. 〜に限ったことではない ~ni kagitta koto de wa nai (Not just… / Not limited to…)
Conjugation
- Noun + に限ったことではない
- Mid-sentence: Noun + に限ったことではなく、〜
- Common frame: 「〜のは、Aに限ったことではない」
※ It sits at the end of the sentence as the predicate; mid-sentence it becomes 「〜に限ったことではなく」.
Meaning
"It's not just A", "this isn't limited to A". Points out that a phenomenon or problem isn't peculiar to A; it exists elsewhere or with others too. Mostly about problems, flaws and bad habits.
Restrictions:
- The topic is a phenomenon or problem, usually introduced with 「〜のは」 or 「〜は」, and the sentence closes with this pattern.
- Usually a negative topic: falling birth rates, labour shortages, lateness… For positive things 「に限らず」 is the usual choice.
- 「今日に限ったことではない」 and 「今回に限ったことではない」 mean "it's not as if this is the first time", with a note of irritation — close to 「今に始まったことではない」.
Example Sentences
- 少子高齢化は日本に限ったことではない。多くの先進国が同じ問題を抱えている。(A shrinking, ageing population isn't just Japan's problem. Many developed countries face the same thing.)
- 彼の遅刻は今日に限ったことではない。先月から何度も繰り返している。(It's not as if today is the first time he's been late. He's been doing it over and over since last month.)
- 若者の読書離れがよく話題になるが、本を読まなくなったのは若者に限ったことではない。(People often talk about young people turning away from books, but it isn't only the young who have stopped reading.)
- 深刻な人手不足に悩んでいるのは、介護業界に限ったことではない。(The care industry isn't the only one struggling with a serious shortage of staff.)
- ネット上の誹謗中傷は有名人に限ったことではなく、一般の人も被害に遭っている。(Online abuse isn't limited to celebrities; ordinary people fall victim to it too.)
Comparison
| Expression | Position | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| に限ったことではない | end of sentence (predicate) | this isn't peculiar to A; usually a problem |
| に限らず | mid-sentence (modifies what follows) | not only A; B too (N3 Lesson 41) |
| に限って | mid-sentence | of all times, just when A (N3 Lesson 41) |
| 今に始まったことではない | end of sentence | it's nothing new; criticises an old habit |
「この問題は日本に限ったことではない」= this problem isn't Japan's alone (a closing judgment)
「この問題は日本に限らず、世界中で起きている」= this problem is happening all over the world, not just in Japan (mid-sentence)
「急いでいる時に限って、電車が遅れる」= the train is late precisely when I'm in a hurry (a completely different meaning)

7. 〜を限りに ~wo kagiri ni (As of… / …will be the last)
Conjugation
- Noun (time words: 今日, 今月末, 今回, 本年度, 今シーズン…) + を限りに
- Set phrase: 「声を限りに」 (at the top of one's voice)
※ 「限り」 means "limit"; 「〜を限りに」 is "making A the final limit".
Meaning
"As of A, (… no more)", "A will be the last". Something ongoing ends at point A and doesn't continue after it. The main clause is a word of ending: 「やめる」, 「引退する」, 「閉店する」, 「廃止される」, 「終了する」. It often carries a sense of resolve or of saying a fond farewell.
Restrictions:
- A is normally a time word marking the end point: ⭕ 「今日を限りに」, 「今月末を限りに」.
- The main clause must be an ending or stopping: ❌ 「今日を限りに日記をつけ始めた」 (to start something new use 「を機に」 or 「から」).
- In 「声を限りに叫ぶ」, 「を限りに」 means "to the limit (of one's voice)", nothing to do with time.
Example Sentences
- 今日を限りに、たばこはきっぱりやめることにした。(I've decided that today is the last day I smoke — I'm quitting for good.)
- 当店は、今月末を限りに閉店することとなりました。長年のご愛顧、誠にありがとうございました。(This shop will close its doors at the end of this month. Thank you sincerely for your custom over the years.)

- この路線バスは、本年度を限りに廃止されることが決まった。(It has been decided that this bus route will be discontinued at the end of this fiscal year.)
- 遭難者たちは、上空のヘリコプターに向かって声を限りに叫んだ。(The stranded climbers shouted at the top of their voices to the helicopter overhead.)
Comparison
| Expression | Meaning | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| を限りに | as of A, no more | A decided cut-off point; often with resolve or a fond farewell |
| をもって | as of A | Most formal; for notices and official speeches (Lesson 90) |
| を最後に | with A as the last time | Narrates the past: after A, it never happened again |
| を機に | taking A as the occasion | A turning point for starting something new (N2 Lesson 63) |
「本日をもって閉店いたします」= a formal notice, more official than 「を限りに」
「その電話を最後に、彼とは連絡が取れなくなった」= after that call I never heard from him again (A is an event that happened, not a deadline someone set)
「退職を機に、田舎に引っ越した」= I moved to the countryside when I retired (starting something new)
On the test, when the blank follows a time word like 「今日/今月末/今シーズン」 and is followed by 「やめる/引退する/閉店する」, pick 「を限りに」 (「をもって」 often works as well).

- はおろか
- を限りに (「をもって」 also works and is more formal)
- ならではの
- もさることながら (the main clause 「使いやすさが高く評価されている」 singles out B, so 「はおろか」 doesn't fit)
- に限ったことではない
- を除いて (a plain exclusion, not high praise, so 「をおいて」 can't be used)
- このプロジェクトの責任者を任せられるのは、彼女をおいてほかにいない。
