English has one verb, "give", but Japanese splits it into あげる, くれる and もらう, and the right one depends on which way the thing travels and whose point of view you speak from. Add て to get てあげる, てくれる and てもらう and the rules stay exactly the same — only now what's given is a favour, not an object. This page combines giving and receiving from Lesson 20 with the polite versions from Lesson 27 and Lesson 28: a short answer and comparison table first, then seven situations side by side, and finally a decision flow and a 10-question self-test.
一句话结论The Short Answer
- あげる:从我(或我方的人)给出去,或者两个外人之间给。主语是给的人。
- くれる:别人给我(或我方的人)。主语是给的人,带着"对方真好"的感激。
- もらう:我(或我方的人)从别人那里得到。主语是收的人,对方用 に 或 から。
判断时先问一句:东西是往"我这边"来,还是从"我这边"出去? 出去用あげる;进来时,给的人做主语用くれる,自己做主语用もらう。
- あげる: giving outward, from me (or my side) to someone else, or between two outsiders. The giver is the subject.
- くれる: someone else gives to me (or to my side). The giver is the subject, with a sense of gratitude.
- もらう: I (or my side) receive from someone. The receiver is the subject; the giver takes に or から.
Ask one question first: is the thing coming toward my side, or going out from it? Going out → あげる. Coming in → くれる with the giver as subject, もらう with yourself as subject.

场景对比Situation by Situation
场景 1:我给别人,别人给我Situation 1: I give, someone gives me
(I gave my friend flowers. → me → someone else)
- 友達が私に花をくれた。(My friend gave me flowers. → someone → me, giver as subject)
- 私は友達に花をもらった。(I got flowers from my friend. → someone → me, receiver as subject)
→ The second and third sentences describe the same event with a different subject. The reverse, "I gave my friend…", only works with あげる; 友達は私に花をもらった sounds wrong — when I'm the giver, Japanese tells it from my side.
场景 2:两个外人之间Situation 2: Between two other people
- 田中さんは山田さんにチョコレートをあげた。(田中给了山田巧克力。)
- 山田さんは田中さんにチョコレートをもらった。(山田从田中那里收到了巧克力。)
- ❌ 田中さんは山田さんにチョコレートをくれた。
→ くれる 的收方必须是"我"或"我方的人"。两个外人之间只能用 あげる 或 もらう。
- 田中さんは山田さんにチョコレートをあげた。(Tanaka gave Yamada chocolate.)
- 山田さんは田中さんにチョコレートをもらった。(Yamada got chocolate from Tanaka.)
- ❌ 田中さんは山田さんにチョコレートをくれた。
→ With くれる, the receiver must be me or someone on my side. Between two outsiders, use only あげる or もらう.
场景 3:我方的人(家人、自己人)Situation 3: People on my side (family, my group)
(Our neighbour gave my mother some vegetables. → my mother is on my side, so くれる)
- 友達が弟に古いゲームをくれた。(A friend of mine gave my younger brother an old video game.)
- 母が近所の人にケーキをあげた。(My mother gave a neighbour some cake. → my side → outside)
- 妹は友達に本をもらった。(My younger sister got a book from a friend.)
→ "Me" can stretch to "my side": family, people in my company or my group. An outsider giving to them → くれる; them giving to an outsider → あげる.
(I got a letter from a friend. → a person: に or から both work)
- 会社からボーナスをもらった。(I got a bonus from my company. → for companies, schools and other organisations から is more natural)
- 大学から奨学金をもらっている。(I receive a scholarship from the university.)
- 先生に作文を直してもらった。(I had my teacher correct my essay. → with てもらう, the person doing it usually takes に)
→ から stresses "where it came from", so it suits organisations and groups; に is normally for people.
(I taught my friend Japanese.)
- 友達が駅まで送ってくれた。(My friend took me to the station. → their kindness)
- 友達に駅まで送ってもらった。(I had my friend take me to the station. → me as the subject)
- 私は妹の宿題を手伝ってあげた。(I helped my younger sister with her homework. → not 妹に)
→ The direction rules are exactly the same as for objects. Watch out: てあげる does not add a に by itself. Keep the verb's own particle (友達に教える → 友達に教えてあげる; 友達を送る → 友達を送ってあげる), and when the verb has no slot for the person, use の: 妹の宿題, 友達の荷物.
场景 6:请别人帮忙Situation 6: Asking for a favour
(Can you give me a hand? → between friends or family)
- すみません、写真を撮ってもらえませんか。(Excuse me, could you take a photo for me?)
- 先生、推薦状を書いていただけませんか。(Professor, could you possibly write me a letter of recommendation?)
→ With くれる, ask くれる? / くれない?; with もらう, use the potential もらえる, and the negative question 〜ませんか is politer. To seniors and superiors, use いただけませんか.
场景 7:敬语版本,以及"施恩"的てあげるSituation 7: Polite versions, and てあげる that sounds patronising
(I gave my teacher flowers. → humble form of あげる)
- 先生が辞書をくださった。(My teacher gave me a dictionary. → honorific form of くれる)
- 部長にお土産をいただいた。(I received a souvenir from the department head. → humble form of もらう)
- 部長、そのかばん、お持ちしましょうか。(Shall I carry that bag for you, sir? → not 持ってあげましょうか)
→ てあげる carries "I'm doing you a favour". Offering 〜てあげましょうか to a senior or superior's face is rude, and 〜て差し上げましょうか is no better — use お + masu-stem + します instead. Even with friends, 手伝ってあげたでしょう sounds like calling in a debt. Simply describing something you did for a friend or a child with てあげる is perfectly fine.
判断流程Decision Flow
- Is the thing or favour going out from me (my side)? → あげる / てあげる (差し上げる for superiors; when offering help to their face, use お〜します instead)
- Is it coming in to my side? → giver as subject: くれる / てくれる; me as subject: もらう / てもらう
- Are both people outsiders? → あげる or もらう, never くれる
- With もらう: a person → に / から; a company, school or other organisation → から; the doer in てもらう → に
- Is the other person a senior or superior? → くれる → くださる, もらう → いただく, あげる → 差し上げる
