はずだ (hazu da) and わけだ (wake da) both mean something like "it stands to reason", and both often get translated as "should" or "of course", which is why they are so easy to mix up. Add the negatives はずがない, わけがない and わけではない, and you have five expressions crowded together. This page brings together Lesson 22 (はずだ), Lesson 26 (わけだ and its negatives) and Lesson 64 (わけがない vs はずがない): a one-line answer first, then seven situations side by side, and finally a decision flow and a 10-question self-test.
一句话结论The Short Answer
- はずだ:往前推——手里有依据,推测一个还没亲眼确认的结果——"按理说应该是……"。
- わけだ:往回找——结果或事实已经摆在眼前,把它和原因连起来——"怪不得……""也就是说……"。
判断时问自己一句:结果我已经知道了吗? 还不知道、在推测 → はずだ;已经知道、在找原因或下结论 → わけだ。
- はずだ looks forward: you have grounds, and you predict a result you haven't confirmed yet — "by all rights it should be…".
- わけだ looks back: the result or fact is already in front of you, and you connect it to its cause — "no wonder…", "so in other words…".
Ask one question: do I already know the result? Not yet, I'm predicting → はずだ. Yes, and I'm explaining it or drawing the conclusion → わけだ.

场景对比Situation by Situation
场景 1:还没确认,凭依据推测 → はずだSituation 1: Predicting from grounds, not yet confirmed → はずだ
(Tanaka comes in at eight every morning, so he should be here any minute.)
- 昨日送ったから、荷物は明日届くはずです。(I sent it yesterday, so the package should arrive tomorrow.)
- この道をまっすぐ行けば、駅に出るはずです。(If you go straight along this road, you should come out at the station.)
- 鍵はかばんに入れたはずなんだけど、見つからない。(I'm sure I put the key in my bag, but I can't find it.)
→ The speaker has grounds (a habit, a schedule, a map, a memory) but hasn't seen the result yet.
场景 2:结果已在眼前,刚明白原因 → わけだSituation 2: The result is in front of you; now you see why → わけだ
(All the windows are open. No wonder it's cold.)
- え、ゆうべ全然寝ていないの? 顔色が悪いわけだ。(What, you didn't sleep at all last night? No wonder you look pale.)
- A:あの店、今日は定休日だよ。B:ああ、だから電気が消えていたわけだ。(A: That shop's closed today, it's their regular day off. B: Oh, so that's why the lights were off.)
- 彼女、元アナウンサーなんだって。どうりで話し方がきれいなわけだ。(I hear she used to be a newsreader. No wonder she speaks so beautifully.)
→ "It's cold", "you look pale", "the lights were off" are already known; わけだ hooks them up to the reason just learned.
场景 3:同一个依据,确认前后说法不同Situation 3: Same grounds, before vs after you know
(It's Sunday, so the bank should be closed. → a guess before leaving home)
- 今日は日曜日か。どうりで銀行が閉まっているわけだ。(Oh, it's Sunday. No wonder the bank is closed. → standing at the locked door)
- 彼は十年もアメリカにいたんだから、英語が上手なはずだ。(He lived in the US for ten years, so his English must be good. → you haven't heard him yet)
- 十年もアメリカにいたのか。それで英語が上手なわけだ。(Ten years in the US? So that's why his English is so good. → you've just heard him)
→ The grounds are identical; the only difference is whether the result has been confirmed. Note: an "aha" はずだ also exists (「どうりで寒いはずだ」), but at N4/N3 the safest habit is to leave "no wonder" to わけだ.
场景 4:换种说法、推出结论 → わけだSituation 4: Restating or working out the conclusion → わけだ
(If you learn fifty a day, that means 1,500 in thirty days.)
- 来月から大阪勤務ですか。じゃあ、引っ越すわけですね。(You're transferring to Osaka next month? So you'll be moving, then.)
- 姉は私より三つ年上で、今年二十五歳だ。つまり私は二十二歳なわけだ。(My sister is three years older than me and turns 25 this year. In other words, I'm 22.)
→ This isn't guessing; it's turning known facts into another conclusion, often with つまり, じゃあ or ということは. Swap in はずだ and the meaning shifts to "it ought to work out that way (but I'm not certain)".
(We were supposed to arrive at three, but traffic made it five.)
- 今日届くはずの荷物が、まだ来ない。(The package that was supposed to arrive today still hasn't come.)
- 薬を飲んだのに、熱が下がらない。こんなはずじゃなかった。(I took the medicine but my fever won't go down. This wasn't supposed to happen.)
→ はず can state the original expectation and set it against what actually happened. わけ has no such "it was planned" use; ❌ わけだったのに is not said.
(Someone as conscientious as Tanaka wouldn't just skip work without a word. Something may have happened.)
- 毎日五時間練習している彼女が、負けるわけがないよ。(She practises five hours a day. There's no way she'll lose.)
- 一週間で十キロもやせられるわけがない。(There's no way you can lose ten kilos in a week.)
- 今日は休みだから、彼は会社にいないはずだ。(It's his day off, so he shouldn't be at the office. → compare: ないはずだ is just "should not", much weaker)
→ はずがない and わけがない are both strong denials and are interchangeable in most sentences. The fine difference: はずがない leans on "given what I know", while わけがない is more colloquial and subjective, often with some emotion in it.
场景 7:"并不是……" → わけではないSituation 7: "It's not that…"
(It's not that I dislike cooking. I just don't have time.)
- 高い店がいつもおいしいわけではない。(Expensive restaurants aren't always good.)
- 大阪の人がみんな、家でたこ焼きを作るわけではない。(Not everyone in Osaka makes takoyaki at home.)
- 行きたくないわけではないが、今週はちょっと忙しい。(It's not that I don't want to go, but I'm a bit busy this week.)
→ わけではない doesn't mean "impossible"; it rejects a conclusion the listener might draw: "you might think…, but that's not it". One particle away from わけがない, with a completely different meaning.
判断流程Decision Flow
- Do you mean "there's no way"? → はずがない / わけがない (concrete grounds lean はず; an emotional rebuttal leans わけ)
- Do you mean "it's not that…" / "not necessarily"? → わけではない
- Was something expected that didn't happen? → はずだった(のに)
- Do you already know the result, and have just found the reason (どうりで・だから・それで)? → わけだ
- Are you restating known facts or working out the conclusion with つまり / じゃあ? → わけだ
- Is the result not yet confirmed, and you're predicting from grounds? → はずだ (for your own plans, use つもり)
