あいだ (aida), あいだに (aida ni) and うちに (uchi ni) all have to do with "during", and all can be translated "while…", but each one looks at time differently: one at the whole stretch, one at a single point inside it, one at "before the situation changes". This page brings together Lesson 33 (あいだ, あいだに) and Lesson 48 (うちに): a one-line answer, a comparison table, seven typical situations, a decision flow, and a 9-question self-test.
The Short Answer
- あいだ: the main action or state fills the whole period — "the whole time…, (I was) …".
- あいだに: at some point within the period, something gets done or happens — "during…, (X happened)".
- うちに: focuses on a state that is bound to change — "while it's still…, (do it now)"; 〜ているうちに also means "while doing…, before I knew it…".
Look at the second half first: continuous → あいだ; a one-off event → あいだに; "while you still can" or "it changed without my noticing" → うちに.

Situation by Situation
(While Mum was cooking, the kids were watching TV.)
(I watched films the whole time I was on the plane.)
(Please keep your phone switched off during the meeting.)
(I spent the whole summer holiday at my grandfather's house.)
→ The second clause is something ongoing that fills the period of the first. It often comes with ずっと or 〜ていた.
Situation 2: Something done or happening within the period → あいだに
(While Mum was cooking, I tidied up the room.)
(A package had arrived while I was out.)
(I went to the bank during my lunch break.)
(Snow had piled up while I was asleep.)
→ "Tidied up", "arrived", "went to the bank" are one-off events with a result, taking up only part of the period, so に is added.
(I read the whole time I was waiting for the train.)
(While waiting for the train, I bought a rice ball at the convenience store.)
(The students listened quietly the whole time the teacher was speaking.)
(While the teacher was speaking, one student walked out of the classroom.)
→ The only difference is に: without it, "from start to finish"; with it, "at some moment in between".
Situation 4: While the state still holds → うちに
(Please eat it while it's still warm.)
(I want to go cherry-blossom viewing once while the blossoms are still nice.)
(I want to travel abroad with my parents while they're still healthy.)
(Let me write down today's conversation while it's still fresh in my mind.)
→ Warm food, cherry blossoms, healthy parents: all states that will change sooner or later. うちに carries "if I don't do it now, it'll be too late", and the second clause is usually an intention, wish or request.
(Let's bring the futon in before it starts to rain.)
(Please have it before it gets cold.)
(I'll sign up now, before I change my mind.)
→ Literally "while it hasn't yet…", ないうちに is close to "before…". Compared with 前に it adds urgency: 雨が降る前に is a neutral "before it rains", 雨が降らないうちに is "beat the rain".
Situation 6: While doing…, it changed without my noticing → ているうちに
(After listening to it again and again, I ended up knowing the lyrics.)
(As we talked, my nerves gradually eased.)
(I was playing a game, and before I knew it, it was morning.)
(Living in Japan, I somehow came to like natto.)
→ The second clause is a change you didn't deliberately bring about, often with なる, 〜てくる, 〜てしまう, いつのまにか or だんだん. This "gradual change" sense is normally expressed with うちに, not あいだに.
场景 7:あいだ(に) 和 うちに 都能用时,差在哪里Situation 7: When both あいだ(に) and うちに work, what's the difference
(While the kids are still little, I want to take them to lots of places. → they'll grow up eventually)
(While the kids are small, I plan to work less. → the whole period)
(Let's rearrange the room while my parents are away on their trip. → a neutral time span)
(Let's rearrange the room before my parents get back. → stresses "once they're back, we can't")
→ When both are correct, あいだ(に) simply marks out a stretch of time, while うちに puts the focus on "once this ends, it'll be too late". For a period with clear start and end points, such as "from three to five", use
