Without, Inevitability & Compulsion — なしに/ことなしに/ずにはおかない/ずにはすまない/を禁じ得ない/を余儀なくされる

📅 Updated · ⏱ 33 min read

This lesson covers "without…" and "can't help but / be bound to / be forced to". 「なしに」 and 「ことなしに」 mean doing something without something else; add 「は」 and a negative and they become "without…, you can't…". 「ずにはおかない」 means something is bound to provoke a reaction in people, or expresses a fierce resolve to do something; 「ずにはすまない」 means you won't get away without doing it, given the situation or what is expected; 「を禁(きん)じ得(え)ない」 means you can't hold back a feeling; and 「を余儀(よぎ)なくされる」 means circumstances force you into something you didn't want. The last four are close to 「ずにはいられない」, 「ざるを得(え)ない」 and 「ないわけにはいかない」 from N3/N2; the difference lies in whose will is involved and what is doing the forcing, and that is exactly what N1 grammar questions test.

1. 〜なしに/なしには ~nashi ni / nashi ni wa (Without… / Without…, (one) can't…)

Conjugation

  • Noun + なしに
  • Noun + もなしに (stresses "without even…", often 「何(なん)の〜もなしに」)
  • Noun + なしには + negative (〜できない / 〜あり得(え)ない / 〜られない)

※ 「なしに」 is a written way of saying 「なくて」 / 「ないで」. In speech 「なしで」 is more usual.

Meaning

  • なしに: "without…". Something is done without what would normally be there (notice, permission, a break), often with a critical "should have, but didn't" tone.
  • なしには: "without…, (one) can't…". A is a necessary condition for B, and the main clause must be a negative or "impossible"; same meaning as 「なくして(は)」 in Lesson 81.

Restrictions:

  • The noun is usually an action noun or something one would normally expect: 断(ことわ)り, 予告(よこく), 許可(きょか), 連絡(れんらく), 休(やす)み, 協力(きょうりょく), 努力(どりょく).
  • After 「なしには」 the main clause must be negative: ❌ 「皆(みな)さんの協力(きょうりょく)なしには、成功(せいこう)した」 → ⭕ 「皆(みな)さんの協力(きょうりょく)なしには、成功(せいこう)しなかった」.
  • 「涙(なみだ)なしには語(かた)れない/見(み)られない」 ("can't tell / watch it without tears") is a common set phrase.

Example Sentences

  1. 彼(かれ)は上司(じょうし)に断(ことわ)りなしに、会社(かいしゃ)の機密(きみつ)資料(しりょう)を持(も)ち出(だ)した。(He took confidential company documents out without asking his boss.)
  2. その店(みせ)は何(なん)の予告(よこく)もなしに、突然(とつぜん)閉店(へいてん)してしまった。(The shop suddenly closed down without any warning.)
  3. 工場(こうじょう)の生産(せいさん)ラインは、昼夜(ちゅうや)休(やす)みなしに稼働(かどう)している。(The factory's production line runs day and night without a break.)

  5. その映画(えいが)は、涙(なみだ)なしには見(み)られない感動(かんどう)作(さく)だ。(It's such a moving film that you can't watch it without crying.)

2. 〜ことなしに/ことなしには ~koto nashi ni / koto nashi ni wa (Without doing… (one can't…))

Conjugation

  • Verb dictionary form + ことなしに
  • Verb dictionary form + ことなしには + negative

※ 「なしに」 in point 1 follows a noun; 「ことなしに」 follows a verb. Very formal, typical of essays and speeches.

Meaning

"Without doing… (one can't…)". The typical use is "unless you do A, B is impossible", stressing that A is an essential precondition. The main clause is usually a negative like 「〜できない」, 「〜あり得(え)ない」 or 「〜人(ひと)はいない」.

Restrictions:

  • Mainly for the conditional "without A, no B". To simply report that someone did B without doing A, 「ことなく」 from N2 is more natural: △ 「彼(かれ)は一(いち)度(ど)も休(やす)むことなしに働(はたら)き続(つづ)けた」 → ⭕ 「一(いち)度(ど)も休(やす)むことなく働(はたら)き続(つづ)けた」.
  • Written style; in conversation say 「〜しないで」 or 「〜しなければ」.

Example Sentences

  1. 努力(どりょく)することなしに成功(せいこう)を手(て)にした人(ひと)はいない。(No one has ever achieved success without hard work.)
  2. 人(ひと)は他人(たにん)とかかわることなしに生(い)きていくことはできない。(People cannot live without dealing with others.)

  5. 事前(じぜん)に許可(きょか)を得(え)ることなしに、施設(しせつ)内(ない)を撮影(さつえい)してはならない。(Photography inside the facility is not permitted without prior permission.)

Comparison

Expression Attaches to Use
なしに / なしには noun without A…; without A, can't…
ことなしに / ことなしには verb dictionary form without doing A, can't… (mostly conditional)
ことなく verb dictionary form did B without doing A (a statement of fact); N2 Lesson 71
なくして(は) noun without A, can't…; more solemn than なしには; Lesson 81
ずに / ないで verb nai-form do B without doing A; N3 Lesson 49

「協力(きょうりょく)なしには成功(せいこう)しない」 = 「協力(きょうりょく)なくしては成功(せいこう)しない」 (nouns, same meaning)
「努力(どりょく)することなしに成功(せいこう)はない」 (verb, conditional)
「一(いち)度(ど)も休(やす)むことなく走(はし)り続(つづ)けた」 (verb, a statement of fact — use ことなく)
N1 questions like to set a trap between 「noun +( )」 and 「verb + こと( )」: after a noun choose なしに; after a verb in dictionary form choose ことなしに.

3. 〜ずにはおかない ~zu ni wa okanai (Is bound to… / Will not rest until…)

Conjugation

  • Verb nai-form + ずにはおかない (する → せずにはおかない)
  • Verb nai-form + ないではおかない (same meaning, slightly less formal)

※ Literally "won't leave it without doing…".

Meaning

Two uses:

  • Bound to happen (non-volitional): "is bound to…" or "can't fail to…". The subject is a work, an event, words or actions, and the verb is about making people feel or react: 心(こころ)を動(うご)かす, 感動(かんどう)を与(あた)える, 考(かんが)えさせる, 影響(えいきょう)を及(およ)ぼす, 不安(ふあん)にさせる.
  • Fierce resolve (volitional): "will not rest until…" or "will certainly…". The speaker or someone else is determined to do something, usually revenge, holding someone to account or uncovering the truth; strong and dramatic.

Restrictions:

  • Not for the speaker's own feelings or actions that just burst out: ❌ 「おかしくて笑(わら)わずにはおかない」 → ⭕ 「笑(わら)わずにはいられない」.
  • The non-volitional use is usually a causative + ずにはおかない, or 「影響(えいきょう)を及(およ)ぼす」 and the like — an effect on other people.

Example Sentences

  1. 彼(かれ)の熱(ねつ)のこもった演説(えんぜつ)は、聴衆(ちょうしゅう)の心(こころ)を揺(ゆ)さぶらずにはおかなかった。(His impassioned speech could not fail to stir the audience.)
  2. この作品(さくひん)は、読(よ)む者(もの)に深(ふか)い感動(かんどう)を与(あた)えずにはおかないだろう。(This work is bound to move its readers deeply.)
  3. 相次(あいつ)ぐ値上(ねあ)げは、家計(かけい)に深刻(しんこく)な影響(えいきょう)を及(およ)ぼさずにはおかない。(The string of price rises is bound to hit household budgets hard.)

4. 〜ずにはすまない ~zu ni wa sumanai (Will have to… / Can't get away without…)

Conjugation

  • Verb nai-form + ずにはすまない (する → せずにはすまない)

※ Also written 「ずには済(す)まない」. Literally "it won't be settled without doing…".

Meaning

"Will have to…", "can't get away without…", "it is bound to come to…". Given the situation, one's responsibility or what society expects, the matter can't be settled unless something is done. Typical with apologising, paying compensation, explaining, being disciplined.

Restrictions:

  • The pressure comes from the situation, responsibility or what is proper, not an inner urge: ❌ 「おいしそうで食(た)べずにはすまない」 → ⭕ 「食(た)べずにはいられない」.
  • Often with 「〜以上(いじょう)」, 「〜のだから」 or 「〜だろう」.
  • The exact opposite of 「ずに済(す)む」 (manage without doing) from N2 Lesson 71 — watch for 「は」 and the negative 「ない」.

Example Sentences

  1. 相手(あいて)にけがをさせてしまった以上(いじょう)、直接(ちょくせつ)謝罪(しゃざい)に行(い)かずにはすまない。(Now that I've injured him, I'll have to go and apologise in person.)

  4. 借(か)りた本(ほん)をひどく汚(よご)してしまったので、弁償(べんしょう)せずにはすまないだろう。(I've badly stained the book I borrowed, so I'll probably have to pay for it.)

Comparison

Expression What drives it Example
ずにはいられない one's own urge or feeling (N3 Lesson 53) おかしくて笑(わら)わずにはいられない
ずにはおかない a thing bound to provoke a reaction; or fierce resolve 人(ひと)の心(こころ)を動(うご)かさずにはおかない
ずにはすまない the situation, responsibility, social norms 謝(あやま)らずにはすまない

ないではすまない almost the same as ずにはすまない, a little less formal (Lesson 86) 謝(あやま)らないではすまない

Look at the subject and the cause:
「笑(わら)わずにはいられない」 — the speaker can't hold it in (inner)
「この映画(えいが)は人(ひと)を感動(かんどう)させずにはおかない」 — the film is bound to move people (thing → others)
「謝(あやま)らずにはすまない」 — the situation leaves no way out but to apologise (outside pressure)
「ずには済(す)まない」 (with 「は」, negative) and 「ずに済(す)む」 (affirmative) look alike but mean opposite things.

5. 〜を禁じ得ない ~wo kinji e nai (Cannot help feeling… / Cannot hold back…)

Conjugation

  • Noun + を禁(きん)じ得(え)ない

※ 「禁(きん)じる」 (to forbid, suppress) + 「得(え)ない」 (cannot) = "cannot suppress". The noun is an emotion: 驚(おどろ)き, 怒(いか)り, 憤(いきどお)り, 同情(どうじょう), 涙(なみだ), 失望(しつぼう), 戸惑(とまど)い, 苦笑(くしょう).

Meaning

"Cannot help feeling…", "cannot hold back…". On seeing or hearing something, a feeling wells up that can't be kept down. Very formal and solemn, typical of commentary, statements and speeches.

Restrictions:

  • Only emotion nouns, not verbs: ❌ 「彼(かれ)を責(せ)めることを禁(きん)じ得(え)ない」 → ⭕ 「彼(かれ)を責(せ)めずにはいられない」.
  • Mostly the speaker's own feelings. For a third person, only in narrative such as fiction: △ 「彼(かれ)は怒(いか)りを禁(きん)じ得(え)なかった」.

  5. 戦争(せんそう)で引(ひ)き裂(さ)かれた親子(おやこ)が五(ご)十(じゅう)年(ねん)ぶりに再会(さいかい)する姿(すがた)に、涙(なみだ)を禁(きん)じ得(え)なかった。(Watching a parent and child torn apart by war meet again after fifty years, I couldn't hold back my tears.)

  • Noun + を余儀(よぎ)なくさせる (「a circumstance が someone に〜を余儀(よぎ)なくさせる」)

※ 「余儀(よぎ)ない」 = there is no other way. The noun is usually the noun part of a する-verb: 中止(ちゅうし), 延期(えんき), 撤退(てったい), 変更(へんこう), 入院(にゅういん), 引退(いんたい), 避難(ひなん)生活(せいかつ), 値上(ねあ)げ.

Meaning

  • を余儀(よぎ)なくされる: "be forced to…", "have no choice but to…". Natural disasters, illness, the economy or other circumstances leave someone no option but something they didn't want. Extremely common in the news.
  • を余儀(よぎ)なくさせる: "force… to…". The subject is the cause (a typhoon, an injury, rising prices), and the person affected is marked with 「に」.

Restrictions:

  • Only for unwelcome things one is pushed into, never something one wanted: ❌ 「念願(ねんがん)の海外(かいがい)旅行(りょこう)を余儀(よぎ)なくされた」.
  • The pressure comes from circumstances, not a direct order from a person: △ 「部長(ぶちょう)に残業(ざんぎょう)を余儀(よぎ)なくされた」 → ⭕ 「部長(ぶちょう)に残業(ざんぎょう)させられた」 (causative passive, N4 Lesson 19).
