Emotion & Emphasis — てやまない/極まりない/といったらない/限りだ/とは/てはばからない

📅 Updated · ⏱ 37 min read

This lesson covers grammar for strong emotion and emphasis. 「てやまない」 expresses a heartfelt, lasting wish or devotion and belongs to speeches and formal letters; 「極(きわ)まりない」 and 「極(きわ)まる」 mean "utterly…", usually in harsh criticism; 「といったらない」 means something is more than words can describe; 「限(かぎ)りだ」 states the speaker's own feeling right now, "I couldn't be more…"; 「とは」 expresses surprise or shock, "to think that…"; and 「てはばからない」 means someone openly says what others would hesitate to say. These patterns differ mainly in what they attach to (verbs, adjectives or nouns), which words they combine with and whose feelings they describe, and N1 questions nearly always test exactly those points.

1. 〜てやまない ~te yamanai (Never cease to… / Sincerely…)

Conjugation

  • Verb te-form + やまない
  • Verb te-form + やみません (polite form, in speeches and letters)

※ In kanji 「やまない」 is 「止(や)まない」, but it is normally written in kana. Often paired with 「心(こころ)より」 or 「心(こころ)から」.

Meaning

"Sincerely…" or "never cease to…". Literally "(the feeling) does not stop" — a strong, heartfelt feeling that lasts, usually a wish, prayer, love, respect or hope.

Restrictions:

  • Only verbs of feeling or wishing: 願(ねが)う, 祈(いの)る, 望(のぞ)む, 期待(きたい)する, 愛(あい)する, 尊敬(そんけい)する, 憧(あこが)れる, plus 「魅了(みりょう)する」, 「惹(ひ)きつける」 and the like. Action verbs don't work: ❌ 「毎日(まいにち)練習(れんしゅう)してやまない」.
  • The feeling has to be lasting; a momentary reaction doesn't work: ❌ 「その知(し)らせを聞(き)いて驚(おどろ)いてやまなかった」.
  • At the end of a sentence it is usually the speaker's own feeling (speeches, letters, essays); for someone else's feeling it mostly modifies a noun: 「彼(かれ)が愛(あい)してやまない故郷(こきょう)」, 「多(おお)くの人(ひと)を魅了(みりょう)してやまない作品(さくひん)」.
  • Formal; in everyday conversation you'd say 「心(こころ)から〜と思(おも)っています」.

Example Sentences

  1. 皆様(みなさま)のますますのご健勝(けんしょう)とご多幸(たこう)を、心(こころ)よりお祈(いの)りしてやみません。(I sincerely wish you all continued good health and every happiness.)
  2. 新(あたら)しい職場(しょくば)での皆(みな)さんのご活躍(かつやく)を期待(きたい)してやみません。(I have the highest hopes for all of you in your new workplaces.)
  3. 祖父(そふ)が生涯(しょうがい)愛(あい)してやまなかった故郷(こきょう)の海(うみ)は、今(いま)も変(か)わらず美(うつく)しい。(The sea of his hometown, which my grandfather loved all his life, is as beautiful as ever.)
  4. 彼(かれ)の作品(さくひん)は、世代(せだい)を超(こ)えて多(おお)くの人々(ひとびと)を魅了(みりょう)してやまない。(His work never ceases to captivate people across generations.)
  5. 学生(がくせい)時代(じだい)から尊敬(そんけい)してやまない恩師(おんし)が、先月(せんげつ)この世(よ)を去(さ)った。(The teacher I have deeply respected ever since my student days passed away last month.)

Comparison

Expression Kind of feeling Register
てやまない a lasting wish, love or respect for someone/something Written; formal
てたまらない a physical sensation or strong emotion, "can't stand it" Fine in speech (N3 Lesson 57)
てならない a feeling that wells up on its own (「気(き)がしてならない」) Slightly formal (N3 Lesson 57)
ずにはいられない can't help doing something Neutral (N3 Lesson 53)

❌ 恩師(おんし)のご健康(けんこう)を祈(いの)ってたまらない → ⭕ 恩師(おんし)のご健康(けんこう)を祈(いの)ってやまない
⭕ のどが渇(かわ)いてたまらない (a physical sensation) → ❌ のどが渇(かわ)いてやまない
On the test, 「てやまない」 almost always follows 願(ねが)う, 祈(いの)る, 愛(あい)する, 期待(きたい)する or 尊敬(そんけい)する; 「心(こころ)より」 or 「〜ことを」 in the sentence is a strong hint.

2. 〜極まりない/〜極まる ~kiwamarinai / ~kiwamaru (Utterly… / Extremely…)

Conjugation

  • Na-adjective stem + 極(きわ)まりない
  • Na-adjective stem + 極(きわ)まる
  • Na-adjective + な + こと極(きわ)まりない (less common)
  • I-adjective + こと極(きわ)まりない (危(あぶ)ないこと極(きわ)まりない; the only way to use an i-adjective)

※ 「極(きわ)まる」 is read 「きわまる」. The set phrase 「感極(かんきわ)まる」 (to be overcome with emotion) is an exception, with the noun 「感(かん)」 in front.

Meaning

"Utterly…" or "extremely…". 「極(きわ)まる」 means "to reach the limit" and 「極(きわ)まりない」 literally "has no limit"; they mean the same thing — the degree is as high as it goes. Mostly harsh criticism, showing the speaker's strong displeasure or indignation.

Restrictions:

  • Mainly Sino-Japanese na-adjectives: 失礼, 危険, 不愉快, 無責任, 卑劣, 迷惑, 無神経, 曖昧, 退屈, 単調…. I-adjectives can't attach directly: ❌ 「危ない極まりない」, 「つまらない極まりない」; say 「危ないこと極まりない」 instead.
  • Almost always negative; 「簡単(かんたん)極(きわ)まりない」 or 「便利(べんり)極(きわ)まりない」 do occur, but rarely, and can sound sarcastic.
  • Today 「極(きわ)まりない」 is more common than 「極(きわ)まる」; 「極(きわ)まる」 sounds more literary and appears mostly before a noun (「曖昧(あいまい)極(きわ)まる答弁(とうべん)」) or at the end of a sentence.
  • Stiff and written; in speech you'd say 「すごく失礼(しつれい)だ」 or 「本当(ほんとう)に危(あぶ)ない」.

Example Sentences

  1. 運転(うんてん)中(ちゅう)にスマートフォンを操作(そうさ)するのは、危険(きけん)極(きわ)まりない行為(こうい)だ。(Using a smartphone while driving is extremely dangerous.)
  2. 連絡(れんらく)もなく一(いち)時間(じかん)も遅(おく)れてきて、謝罪(しゃざい)の一言(ひとこと)もない。失礼(しつれい)極(きわ)まりない話(はなし)だ。(He turned up an hour late without a word, and didn't even apologise. It's utterly rude.)
  3. 被害(ひがい)者(しゃ)の心情(しんじょう)を無視(むし)した市長(しちょう)の発言(はつげん)は、「無神経(むしんけい)極(きわ)まりない」と批判(ひはん)を浴(あ)びた。(The mayor's remark, which ignored the victims' feelings, was attacked as "utterly insensitive".)
  4. 不祥事(ふしょうじ)について問(と)われた大臣(だいじん)の答弁(とうべん)は、曖昧(あいまい)極(きわ)まるものだった。(When questioned about the scandal, the minister gave an extremely vague answer.)
  5. 優勝(ゆうしょう)が決(き)まった瞬間(しゅんかん)、監督(かんとく)は感極(かんきわ)まって涙(なみだ)を流(なが)した。(The moment the victory was sealed, the coach was overcome with emotion and wept.)

Comparison

Expression Attaches to Evaluation

△ 光栄(こうえい)極(きわ)まりない (for gratitude, 「の極(きわ)み」 or 「この上(うえ)ない」 sounds more natural)
❌ 危(あぶ)ない極(きわ)まりない → ⭕ 危険(きけん)極(きわ)まりない / ⭕ 危(あぶ)ないこと極(きわ)まりない (only na-adjective stems attach directly)
「感極(かんきわ)まる」 usually appears as 「感極(かんきわ)まって泣(な)く/涙(なみだ)ぐむ」; it is positive emotion and has nothing to do with the critical tone of 「〜極(きわ)まる」.

3. 〜といったらない ~to ittaranai (Indescribably… / Beyond words)

Conjugation

  • Noun + といったらない (most often an adjective turned noun with 「〜さ」: 美(うつく)しさ, 悔(くや)しさ, 寒(さむ)さ)
  • I-adjective dictionary form + といったらない
  • Casual: 〜ったらない (「うるさいったらない」)
  • Negative only: 〜といったらありはしない / 〜といったらありゃしない

※ For something in the past, use 「といったらなかった」.

Meaning

"Indescribably…" or "you can't imagine how…". Literally "speaking of… (there are no words)" — the degree is beyond what words can express, with the speaker's sense of wonder or exasperation.

Restrictions:

  • 「といったらない」 works for positive or negative feelings: being moved, beauty, joy, but also regret, cold or embarrassment.
  • 「といったらありはしない/ありゃしない」 is negative only, a complaint: ❌ 「景色(けしき)の美(うつく)しさといったらありゃしない」.
  • It expresses a strong feeling the speaker experienced first-hand; what comes before is basically a noun or adjective, verbs are rare: △ 「疲(つか)れたといったらない」.
  • 「ったらない」 and 「ありゃしない」 are very colloquial; in formal writing use 「といったらない」.

Example Sentences

  1. 初(はじ)めてオーロラを目(め)にしたときの感動(かんどう)といったらなかった。(I can't describe how moved I was the first time I saw the aurora.)
  2. 決勝(けっしょう)戦(せん)でわずか一(いっ)点(てん)差(さ)で敗(やぶ)れたときの悔(くや)しさといったらなかった。(Losing the final by a single point was more frustrating than words can say.)
  3. 満員(まんいん)電車(でんしゃ)で一(いち)時間(じかん)立(た)ちっぱなしの通勤(つうきん)のつらさといったらない。(You can't imagine how hard it is to commute standing for an hour on a packed train.)
  4. 隣(となり)の部屋(へや)は毎晩(まいばん)のように騒(さわ)いでいて、うるさいといったらありゃしない。(The people next door make a racket practically every night — it's unbearably noisy.)
  5. 大勢(たいせい)の前(まえ)で社長(しゃちょう)の名前(なまえ)を言(い)い間違(まちが)えてしまい、恥(は)ずかしいったらなかった。(I got the company president's name wrong in front of everyone — I've never been so embarrassed.)

Comparison

Expression Attaches to Feel
といったらない noun (〜さ), i-adjective beyond words; positive or negative
といったらありゃしない same negative only, a complaint; casual
ことか 「どんなに/なんと〜ことか」 exclamation, "how…!" (N3 Lesson 57)
限(かぎ)りだ adjective of feeling the speaker's feeling right now; formal (point 4)

「頂上(ちょうじょう)から見(み)た景色(けしき)の美(うつく)しさといったら、言葉(ことば)では言(い)い表(あらわ)せないほどだった。」 — here 「といったら」 raises a topic and a description follows; close in meaning, but not the set form 「といったらない」.
The 「ない」 in 「といったらない」 is not a negative: 「寒(さむ)さといったらない」 = unbelievably cold, not "not cold".

4. 〜限りだ ~kagiri da (I couldn't be more… / Extremely…)

Conjugation

  • I-adjective dictionary form + 限(かぎ)りだ
  • Na-adjective + な + 限(かぎ)りだ

※ Also written 「かぎりだ」; polite form 「〜限(かぎ)りです」. 「お恥(は)ずかしい限(かぎ)りです」 is a set phrase in apologies.

Meaning

"I couldn't be more…" or "it's extremely…". The speaker's own feeling at this moment is as strong as it gets. The tone is dignified, common in speeches, letters, interview answers and essays.

Restrictions:

  • Only adjectives of feeling: うれしい, 寂(さび)しい, 心細(こころぼそ)い, うらやましい, 悲(かな)しい, 恥(は)ずかしい, 心強(こころづよ)い, 頼(たの)もしい, 腹立(はらだ)たしい, 残念(ざんねん)な, 喜(よろこ)ばしい. Adjectives describing objective qualities don't work: ❌ 「この部屋(へや)は広(ひろ)い限(かぎ)りだ」.
  • Only the speaker's own feeling: ❌ 「彼(かれ)はうれしい限(かぎ)りだ」 (for someone else use 「うれしそうだ」 or 「うれしがっている」).
  • Not physical sensations: ❌ 「腰(こし)が痛(いた)い限(かぎ)りだ」 (use 「痛(いた)くてたまらない」).
  • Usually non-past — it is about how one feels now.
  • Don't confuse it with 「〜ない限(かぎ)り」 (unless…) or 「〜限(かぎ)りでは」 (as far as…), which are about scope and conditions.

Example Sentences

  1. 長年(ながねん)の研究(けんきゅう)がようやく認(みと)められ、うれしい限(かぎ)りです。(My years of research have finally been recognised, and I couldn't be happier.)
  2. 子(こ)どもたちが皆(みな)独立(どくりつ)して家(いえ)を出(で)てしまい、寂(さび)しい限(かぎ)りだ。(All the children have grown up and left home, and it's terribly lonely.)

  4. 定年(ていねん)後(ご)は夫婦(ふうふ)で世界中(せかいじゅう)を旅(たび)しているなんて、うらやましい限(かぎ)りだ。(Travelling the world as a couple after retirement — I couldn't be more envious.)
  5. このような初歩(しょほ)的(てき)なミスで皆様(みなさま)にご迷惑(めいわく)をおかけし、お恥(は)ずかしい限(かぎ)りです。(I am deeply ashamed to have caused you all trouble with such a basic mistake.)

Comparison

Expression Attaches to Feel
限(かぎ)りだ adjective of feeling the speaker's feeling now; dignified
てたまらない adjective te-form can't bear it; physical sensations OK; fine in speech (N3 Lesson 57)
といったらない noun (〜さ) beyond words; with wonder (point 3)

⭕ 寂(さび)しい限(かぎ)りだ / ⭕ 寂(さび)しくてたまらない / ⭕ 寂(さび)しさといったらない
⭕ 腰(こし)が痛(いた)くてたまらない → ❌ 腰(こし)が痛(いた)い限(かぎ)りだ
Test questions often hinge on the form: 「限(かぎ)りだ」 follows the plain i-adjective or 「な」, 「てたまらない」 follows 「くて」, and 「といったらない」 usually follows 「〜さ」.

5. 〜とは ~to wa (To think that… / I never imagined…)

Conjugation

  • Plain form + とは (the 「だ」 after nouns and na-adjectives is often dropped)
  • Common combinations: まさか〜とは / 〜とは思(おも)わなかった / 〜とは驚(おどろ)いた / 〜とは信(しん)じられない

※ The rest of the sentence is often left out, ending simply 「〜とは。」 and letting the feeling hang.

Meaning

"To think that…" or "I never imagined…". Surprise, wonder or indignation at an unexpected fact.

Restrictions:

  • About something that has happened or that one has just learned; not for hypotheticals or the speaker's own future plans.
  • Expresses the speaker's emotion; mostly written or formal — in speech 「〜なんて」 is usual (N3 Lesson 47).
  • The main clause, if there is one, is a feeling or judgment: 「驚(おどろ)いた」, 「あきれた」, 「残念(ざんねん)だ」, 「誰(だれ)が想像(そうぞう)しただろうか」.
  • Don't confuse it with the defining 「AとはBのことだ」 ("A means B").

Example Sentences

  1. まさかあの真面目(まじめ)な彼(かれ)が、会社(かいしゃ)の金(きん)を横領(おうりょう)していたとは。(To think that someone as upright as him had been embezzling company money.)
  2. 十(じゅう)年(ねん)ぶりに訪(おとず)れた故郷(こきょう)が、これほど変(か)わってしまっているとは思(おも)いもしなかった。(I never imagined my hometown would have changed so much when I went back after ten years.)
  3. あれほど練習(れんしゅう)を重(かさ)ねてきたチームが一(いっ)回戦(かいせん)で敗退(はいたい)するとは、誰(だれ)が予想(よそう)しただろうか。(Who could have predicted that a team that had trained so hard would go out in the first round?)
  4. 小学生(しょうがくせい)がこんな難(むずか)しい問題(もんだい)をあっさり解(と)いてしまうとは、驚(おどろ)きだ。(It's amazing that an elementary school pupil could solve such a hard problem so easily.)
  5. 公(おおやけ)の場(ば)でこのような差別(さべつ)的(てき)な発言(はつげん)をするとは、あきれて物(もの)も言(い)えない。(Making such a discriminatory remark in public — I'm lost for words.)

Comparison

Expression Meaning Difference
とは (exclamation) to think that… written; surprise or indignation
なんて to think that… / things like… casual; can also be dismissive (N3 Lesson 47)
AとはB(のこと)だ A means B a definition, no emotion
とはいえ that said… concession (N3 Lesson 39)
とは限(かぎ)らない not necessarily partial negation (N3 Lesson 55)

「彼(かれ)が犯人(はんにん)だったとは。」= to think he was the culprit (exclamation)
「『積(つ)ん読』とは、買(か)った本(ほん)を読(よ)まずに積(つ)んでおくことだ。」= "tsundoku" means buying books and leaving them piled up unread (definition)
N1 often tests 「とは」 next to 「なんて」 and 「とはいえ」: if the sentence ends at 「〜とは。」 or goes on with 「思(おも)わなかった/驚(おどろ)いた」, it is the exclamatory 「とは」.

6. 〜てはばからない ~te habakaranai (Not hesitate to… / Openly…)

Conjugation

  • Verb te-form + はばからない

※ 「はばかる(憚る)」 means "to hold back out of deference or caution." Common combinations: 言(い)ってはばからない, 公言(こうげん)してはばからない, 豪語(ごうご)してはばからない, 断言(だんげん)してはばからない, 口(くち)にしてはばからない.

Meaning

"Not hesitate to…" or "openly…". Someone says, without any reserve and as a matter of habit, what most people would hesitate or be embarrassed to say. It usually carries the speaker's surprise or criticism.

Restrictions:

  • Almost always after a verb of saying (言(い)う, 公言(こうげん)する, 豪語(ごうご)する, 断言(だんげん)する, 主張(しゅちょう)する, 口(くち)にする). For other actions the usual form is 「人目(ひとめ)もはばからず〜」: △ 「人前(ひとまえ)で泣(な)いてはばからない」 → ⭕ 「人目(ひとめ)もはばからず泣(な)いた」.
  • Usually about a third person; about yourself (「私(わたし)は〜と言(い)ってはばからない」) it means "I'll say so openly" and is less common.
  • What is said tends to be boasting, sweeping claims or extreme views that could offend.
  • It describes a consistent attitude, so it is mostly non-past 「〜てはばからない」.

Example Sentences

  1. 彼(かれ)は「この業界(ぎょうかい)で自分(じぶん)の右(みぎ)に出(で)る者(もの)はいない」と公言(こうげん)してはばからない。(He openly declares that "nobody in this industry can match me".)
  2. その社長(しゃちょう)は、社員(しゃいん)など代(か)わりはいくらでもいると言(い)ってはばからない。(That company president makes no secret of thinking his employees are easily replaceable.)
  3. 彼女(かのじょ)は、次(つぎ)の大会(たいかい)では必(かなら)ず金(きん)メダルを取(と)ると豪語(ごうご)してはばからない。(She boasts without hesitation that she will win gold at the next championships.)
  4. 一部(いちぶ)の評論(ひょうろん)家(か)は、この政策(せいさく)は必(かなら)ず失敗(しっぱい)すると断言(だんげん)してはばからない。(Some critics do not hesitate to declare that this policy is bound to fail.)
  5. 彼(かれ)は人前(ひとまえ)でも上司(じょうし)の悪口(わるぐち)を口(くち)にしてはばからないので、周(まわ)りはいつも冷(ひ)や冷(ひ)やしている。(He bad-mouths his boss openly even in front of others, so the people around him are always on edge.)

Comparison

Expression Meaning Difference
てはばからない (say) without reserve a consistent attitude; almost only verbs of saying
人目(ひとめ)もはばからず not caring who sees any action can follow: 泣(な)く, 抱(だ)き合(あ)う, 大声(おおごえ)で騒(さわ)ぐ
をものともせず undaunted by… ignoring difficulty or danger; usually praise (N2 Lesson 61)
遠慮(えんりょ)なく without holding back neutral; often an invitation, 「遠慮(えんりょ)なく〜てください」

「公言(こうげん)してはばからない」= keeps openly declaring it (critical: they don't hold back)
「人目(ひとめ)もはばからず泣(な)いた」= cried, not caring who saw (a single action)
「どうぞ遠慮(えんりょ)なく召(め)し上(あ)がってください」= please, help yourself (no criticism)

  1. やみません (with 「心(こころ)より」 and 「お祈(いの)りして」 this is the set formula of a speech; 「やまない」 is also correct, but after the polite 「お祈(いの)りして」, 「やみません」 fits better)
  2. 極(きわ)まりない (「危険(きけん)極(きわ)まる」 also works, but on its own at the end of a sentence 「極(きわ)まりない」 is far more common)
  3. といったらなかった (it is about a past moment, so past tense; 「といったらない」 is also acceptable)
  4. 限(かぎ)りです (「限(かぎ)りだ」 is also correct; 「うれしいといったらない」 is grammatical too, but for stating one's own feeling right now, soberly, 「限(かぎ)りだ」 is the natural choice)
  5. とは (「思(おも)わなかった」 has been left out)
  6. はばからない
  7. たまらない (a physical sensation rules out 「限(かぎ)りだ」, and after 「くて」 only 「たまらない」 fits)
  8. 極(きわ)まっ (the set phrase 「感極(かんきわ)まって」)
