Emphasis & Extremes — たりとも/すら・ですら/にして/からある・からする/あっての/の極み・の至り
This lesson covers grammar for emphasis and extremes. 「たりとも」 follows 「一」 + counter and pairs with a negative: "not even one…". 「すら」 and 「ですら」 are a more formal 「さえ」, "even…". 「にして」 has several jobs: "only at…", "both A and B", "in an instant". 「からある」, 「からする」 and 「からの」 stress a large amount: "as much as…, no less than…". 「あっての」 means "B exists only because of A", and 「の極み」 and 「の至り」 mean "the height of…", with mostly fixed collocations. All of them push a degree to its highest or lowest point, and the test mostly asks about what comes before them and what has to follow.

1. 〜たりとも〜ない ~tari to mo ~nai (Not even one…)
Conjugation
- 一 + counter (一日, 一円, 一歩, 一瞬, 一秒, 一滴, 一刻…) + たりとも + negative
- 何人 (なんぴと) + たりとも + negative (a set phrase: "no one whatsoever")
※ Formal and weighty in tone. In 「何人たりとも」, 「何人」 is read 「なんぴと」, not 「なんにん」.
Meaning
"Not even one…". It takes the smallest unit, "one", and says that not even that much is allowed or exists — a sweeping negative. It often goes with prohibitions, obligations or determination (「〜てはならない」, 「〜わけにはいかない」) or with "never" (「〜たことがない」).
Restrictions:
- A negative must follow: ❌ 「一日たりとも休んだ」.
- It attaches to 「一」 + counter, the smallest unit, not any number: △ 「三日たりとも休まなかった」 sounds odd.
- 「少しも」 and 「ちっとも」 are the everyday equivalents; 「たりとも」 is weightier, used in writing, speeches and strong resolutions.
Example Sentences
- 彼はこの十年間、一日たりとも練習を休んだことがない。(In the last ten years he hasn't missed a single day of practice.)
- 国民から預かった税金は、一円たりとも無駄にしてはならない。(Not one yen of the taxes entrusted to us by the public may be wasted.)
- 今回の交渉では、一歩たりとも譲るわけにはいかない。(In these negotiations we cannot give an inch.)
- 容体が急変するおそれがあるので、一瞬たりとも目が離せない。(The patient's condition could suddenly worsen, so we can't take our eyes off him for a second.)
- 選手たちは最後の一球まで、一秒たりとも集中を切らさなかった。(Right up to the last ball, the players didn't lose focus for even a second.)
Comparison
| Expression | Example | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| 一〜も〜ない | 一日も休まない | Everyday; fine in speech and writing |
| 一〜として〜ない | 誰一人として来なかった | "Not a single exception"; mostly states facts |
| 一〜たりとも〜ない | 一日たりとも休まない | Weightiest; usually prohibition, obligation or resolve |
「一人として」 and 「誰一人として」 usually describe what happened (「誰一人として反対しなかった」 not a single person objected); 「たりとも」 is more often paired with prohibitions or resolve like 「〜てはならない」 and 「〜わけにはいかない」.
On the test, 「一」 + counter + ( ) + negative points to 「たりとも」; if what comes before isn't 「一」, rule it out.

2. 〜すら/〜ですら ~sura / ~de sura (Even…)
Conjugation
- Noun + すら
- Noun + particle + すら (にすら, とすら, からすら…)
- Noun + ですら (common when the noun is the subject, especially a person)
- Verb masu-stem + すら + しない
※ It means much the same as 「さえ」 but is more formal. 「ですら」 corresponds to 「でさえ」.
Meaning
"Even…". It names the most basic case, the one that should be no problem at all, implying "if even this is so, the rest goes without saying."
Restrictions:
- Mostly in negative or critical statements (「〜すらない」, 「〜すらできない」, 「〜すらしない」); positive sentences like 「子どもですら知っている」 are possible but less common.
- No conditional use: 「さえ」 has 「〜さえ〜ば」 ("as long as"), 「すら」 doesn't: ❌ 「お金すらあれば」 → ⭕ 「お金さえあれば」.
- 「ですら」 names the person you'd least expect it of: 「専門家ですら」, 「大人ですら」.
Example Sentences
- 忙しくて、昼ご飯を食べる時間すらない。(I'm so busy I don't even have time for lunch.)
- 彼女は親友にすら本当のことを打ち明けなかった。(She didn't tell the truth even to her best friend.)
- この問題については、専門家ですら意見が分かれている。(Even experts are divided on this question.)
- 彼は約束を破っておいて、謝りすらしなかった。(He broke his promise and didn't even apologise.)
- 十年前には想像すらできなかった技術が、今では当たり前になっている。(Technology we couldn't even have imagined ten years ago is now taken for granted.)
Comparison
| Expression | Register | Use |
|---|---|---|
| さえ | speech and writing | even…; also the conditional 「さえ〜ば」 (N3 Lesson 40) |
| すら/ですら | formal | even…; no conditional use; mostly negative or critical |
| まで | speech and writing | even… (adding on), often "going too far": 「子どもにまで迷惑をかけた」 |
| たりとも | weightiest | only after 「一」 + counter; must be negative |
「さえ」 and 「すら」 are mostly interchangeable: 「名前さえ書けない」 = 「名前すら書けない」. But 「〜さえあれば」 and 「〜さえすれば」 only work with 「さえ」.
「まで」 extends the range "even as far as this", often with a "that's too much" tone, and needn't be the most basic case.

3. 〜にして ~ni shite (Only at… / Both… and… / In an instant)
Conjugation
- Noun + にして (初めて / ようやく)
- Noun A + にして + Noun B (でもある)
- 一瞬, 一夜, 一日, 一代 + にして
※ Formal. The three uses look the same; context tells you which one it is.
Meaning
- 〜にして初めて / ようやく: "only at… (an age, stage or level) did…" or "only… can…". The noun is an age, experience or highly skilled person; it stresses that nothing short of this would do.
- AにしてB: "both A and B". A formal way of joining two roles of one person or two qualities of one thing.
- 一瞬にして / 一夜にして: "in an instant" or "overnight". Stresses how short the time was; the main clause is usually a dramatic change (a collapse, a disappearance, sudden fame).
Restrictions:
- After 「にして初めて」 the main clause is usually an achievement — "only then could / did one…": 「職人にして初めて出せる味」.
- Don't confuse it with 「にしては」 (N3 Lesson 47, "for…, surprisingly"): 「四十歳にしては若く見える」 is "he looks young for forty"; 「四十歳にしてようやく」 is "only at forty did he finally…".
- There is also a literary "given such an A, naturally B" use, mostly in the proverb 「この親にしてこの子あり」 (like father, like son); it's rarely tested.
Example Sentences
- 四十歳にしてようやく、親のありがたさが身にしみてわかった。(Only at forty did I finally truly understand how much I owed my parents.)
- この繊細な味は、長年修業を積んだ職人にして初めて出せるものだ。(Only a craftsman with years of training could produce such a delicate flavour.)
- 彼は日本を代表する物理学者にして、優れた随筆家でもある。(He is one of Japan's leading physicists and a fine essayist as well.)
- 長年かけて築いた信用が、一つの不祥事で一瞬にして崩れ去った。(Trust built up over many years collapsed in an instant because of a single scandal.)
- 大地震で、美しかった町並みは一夜にして瓦礫の山と化した。(In the great earthquake, the beautiful streets were reduced to rubble overnight.)
Comparison
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| にして(初めて) | only at… did… | 四十歳にしてようやく悟った |
| にしては | for… (surprisingly) (N3 Lesson 47) | 四十歳にしては若い |
| にしても | even if… (N3 Lesson 39) | 冗談にしても言いすぎだ |
| として | as… (a role) (N3 Lesson 47) | 物理学者として知られる |
「AにしてB」 vs 「AとしてB」: 「物理学者にして随筆家」 is "both roles at once"; 「物理学者として」 names a single role.
On the test 「にして」 usually appears as 「〜にして初めて」 or 「一瞬にして」; if you see 「初めて」 or 「ようやく」, think of it.

4. 〜からある/〜からする/〜からの ~kara aru / ~kara suru / ~kara no (As much as… / No less than…)
Conjugation
- Number + counter + からある + noun (weight, length, distance, area)
- Number + counter + からする + noun (price)
- Number + counter + からの + noun (numbers of people, and more generally)
※ Usually modifies the noun after it; 「からする」 can also end the sentence as the predicate.
Meaning
"As much as…" or "no less than…". 「から」 means "counting from this figure" — at least this much, maybe more — and stresses that the speaker finds the amount large and striking.
Restrictions:
- Only for an amount the speaker sees as large: ❌ 「たった1キロからある荷物」 ("a mere" contradicts "as much as").
- Each has its domain: weight, length and distance take 「からある」, prices 「からする」, numbers of people 「からの」: △ 「100万円からある時計」 → ⭕ 「100万円からする時計」.
- It stresses size rather than giving an exact figure, so round numbers are typical (30キロ, 1億円, 5万人).
Example Sentences
- 彼は30キロからある荷物を、一人で軽々と運んでしまった。(He carried a load weighing a good 30 kilos all by himself, as if it were nothing.)
- 祖父は子どものころ、片道10キロからある道のりを歩いて学校に通っていたそうだ。(Apparently, as a child my grandfather walked to school, a good ten kilometres each way.)
- 彼女は一着100万円からする着物を何着も持っている。(She owns several kimonos costing a million yen or more apiece.)
- 駅前の新築マンションは一戸1億円からするが、発売初日に完売した。(The new flats by the station cost upwards of 100 million yen each, yet they sold out on the first day.)
- 決勝戦の会場には、5万人からの観客が詰めかけた。(No fewer than 50,000 spectators packed the stadium for the final.)
Comparison
| Expression | Feel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜も | plain "as much as" | 30キロもある荷物 |
| 〜ほど/くらい | about; no surprise | 30キロほどの荷物 |
| 〜からある | formal; "a good…, maybe more" | 30キロからある荷物 |
「も」 is the plain way to stress an amount and common in speech; 「からある/からする/からの」 are more formal and add "at least this figure."
The test likes the division of labour: 「円」 → 「からする」, 「人」 → 「からの」, 「キロ」 or 「メートル」 → 「からある」.

5. 〜あっての ~atte no (… exists only thanks to… / Without… there'd be no…)
Conjugation
- Noun A + あっての + Noun B
- Noun + あってのことだ
※ 「あって」 is the te-form of 「ある」; both A and B are nouns, with no 「が」 in between.
Meaning
"B exists only because of A" or "without A, there'd be no B". It stresses that A is the precondition for B. Often used to express gratitude (「お客様あっての〜」) or as a reminder not to forget what really matters (「健康あっての人生」).
Restrictions:
- A is something valued and indispensable, so the tone is positive; not for a bad cause: ❌ 「不注意あっての事故」 → ⭕ 「不注意による事故」.
- 「〜あってのことだ」 means "(this result) is thanks to…", usually about a good outcome.
Example Sentences
- 商売はお客様あってのものだ。そのことを決して忘れてはいけない。(A business exists only because of its customers — never forget that.)
- 今回の優勝は、チーム全員の努力あってのことだ。(This championship was won thanks to the effort of every member of the team.)
- 健康あっての人生だ。無理をして体を壊しては元も子もない。(Without your health you have no life — wreck your body by overdoing it and it's all for nothing.)
- プロ選手は、応援してくれるファンあっての存在だということを忘れてはならない。(Professional athletes must not forget that they exist only because of the fans who support them.)
- 地域の信頼あっての銀行なのだから、目先の利益ばかりを追うわけにはいかない。(A bank depends on the trust of its community, so it can't just chase short-term profit.)
Comparison
| Expression | Meaning | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| AあってのB | B exists thanks to A | Noun + noun; A is the precondition; grateful, appreciative tone |
| からこそ | precisely because… (N3 Lesson 55) | Follows a clause; stresses the reason |
| ばこそ | precisely because… (N2 Lesson 60) | More formal; follows a clause; usually the speaker's view |
| なくして(は) | without…, no… (Lesson 81) | The same idea from the negative side: 「努力なくして成功はない」 |
「ファンあっての選手」 ≈ 「ファンがいるからこそ選手でいられる」 ≈ 「ファンなくして選手は存在しない」 — three angles on roughly the same idea.
On the test, 「あっての」 sits between two nouns; 「noun ( ) noun」 meaning "only because of" points to it.

6. 〜の極み/〜の至り ~no kiwami / ~no itari (The height of… / Utterly…)
Conjugation
- Noun + の極み (贅沢, 痛恨, 疲労, 感激, 無責任…)
- Noun + の至り (光栄, 恐縮, 赤面, 汗顔, 若気…)
※ Both are "noun + の", and the nouns they take are largely fixed — learn them as collocations.
Meaning
"The height of…" or "utterly…".
- の極み: a state at its peak, good or bad (「贅沢の極み」 the height of luxury, 「無責任の極み」 utterly irresponsible).
- の至り: mostly on formal occasions, for one's own sense of honour, gratitude or embarrassment (「光栄の至り」, 「恐縮の至り」). 「若気の至り」 is a special case: "a youthful indiscretion".
Restrictions:
- The collocations are fixed: ❌ 「楽しさの至り」. 「光栄」 and 「恐縮」 normally take 「の至り」 (「光栄の極み」 does occur, but learn 「光栄の至り」 for the test).
- 「の至り」 is mostly the speaker describing their own feelings (honour, embarrassment), in speeches and letters; 「の極み」 can describe yourself or judge someone else.
- Both 「感激の極み」 and 「感激の至り」 are used.
Example Sentences
- 夜景を眺めながら一流シェフの料理を味わうのは、まさに贅沢の極みだ。(Savouring a top chef's cooking while gazing at the city lights is the height of luxury.)
- あと一歩のところで優勝を逃したのは、痛恨の極みだ。(Missing out on the title by a whisker is bitterly regrettable.)
- 被害者に何の説明もしないまま辞任するとは、無責任の極みと言わざるを得ない。(Resigning without a word of explanation to the victims can only be called utterly irresponsible.)

- 学生時代に教授に食ってかかったのは、今思えば若気の至りだった。(Flying at my professor as a student was, looking back, a youthful indiscretion.)
Comparison
| Expression | Attaches to | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + の極み | noun + の | a state at its peak, good or bad |
| Noun + の至り | noun + の | formal; usually one's own honour, gratitude or embarrassment |
| 極まりない/極まる | na-adjective stem (Lesson 87) | 「失礼極まりない」; usually critical |
| 〜限りだ | emotion adjective (Lesson 87) | 「うれしい限りだ」; the speaker's own feelings |
「の極み」 and 「の至り」 follow nouns; 「極まりない」 follows a na-adjective stem (「危険極まりない」), and 「限りだ」 an adjective (「心細い限りだ」). The test likes to set traps on what attaches to what.
「若気の至り」 turns up in reading passages; it doesn't mean "extremely young" but "a foolish thing done when young".
