What the JLPT N3 listening section tests
Listening is its own sitting, about 40 minutes, scored on its own (0–60, minimum 19). Each recording plays once, and most questions and options aren't printed, so you take notes as you listen. The item types and how many of each are on the test:
| Item type | On the test | Recordings here |
|---|---|---|
| Task-based listening ·
| Listening for the point ·
| Listening for the gist ·
| What do you say? ·
| Quick response ·
How it works
- Play the recording; in practice you can replay it — to train for the real thing, listen once and answer.
- Speed: close to natural speed, clearly spoken.
- After answering, the transcript appears: Japanese with furigana and a translation, and any line can be replayed on its own, so you can match what you missed to the text.
- Every option is explained: why the answer is right and where each wrong one goes wrong (a favourite trap is an answer given first and changed later).
- Questions you miss or guess come back in a review list a few days later. Progress stays in this browser; no account needed.
Questions
- Is it free?
- Yes — no ads and no sign-up.
- Are these past-paper recordings?
- No. Every script is original, written to the real N3's formats, length and speed; the voices are AI speech (Google Gemini), and every recording was checked line by line for readings and speakers.
- Can I download the MP3s?
- Not for now — they play online, and recordings you've opened are cached so they still play on a weak connection.
- Want a timed run like the real test?
- The last sitting of the N3 mock test is listening: each recording once, time to answer after it, scored with the other parts.
