JLPT N2 Key Grammar — The Points That Come Up Most

📅 Updated · ⏱ 36 min read

A few weeks out from the exam, with no time to go back through all 130 N2 grammar points? This page keeps only the ones that keep coming up: 40 high-frequency points grouped by function (time, concession, cause, degree, judgment, contrast, topic, condition, evaluation), each with its conjugation, meaning and one short example, linked to the lesson that covers it in full. Then come the 10 most confused groups, some exam tips for the grammar questions, and a 10-question self-test at the end.

For every point, use the N2 grammar checklist (you can tick items off); to study lesson by lesson, start from the N2 overview; after each group, drill it in the N2 practice questions, and sit the N2 mock test before the exam. Exam times, pass marks and a six-week review plan are in the December JLPT exam guide.

Top 40 Grammar Points

How these were chosen: patterns that keep turning up in the grammar questions and in reading passages, that look like another pattern and get picked by mistake, or whose second half is restricted (negative only, bad result only). A few points on the N2 checklist (ものの, とはいえ, からには, に限(かぎ)って, どころか, ざるを得(え)ない, かねない, に伴(ともな)って) are taught in N3 lessons on this site; they are just as common in the N2 exam, so they are here too, linked to the lesson that teaches them. The bold part of each example is the pattern being tested.

Most Confused Pairs

に過ぎない vs にほかならない

They look alike but point in opposite directions: に過(す)ぎない plays something down ("merely"), にほかならない plays it up ("precisely this").

  • ⭕ 私(わたし)はただの会社(かいしゃ)員(いん)に過(す)ぎない。(I'm nothing more than an ordinary office worker.)
  • ⭕ 彼(かれ)の成功(せいこう)は、毎日(まいにち)の努力(どりょく)の結果(けっか)にほかならない。(His success is nothing other than the result of daily effort.)
  • ❌ 私(わたし)はただの会社(かいしゃ)員(いん)にほかならない。(ただの belittles; it clashes with the emphatic にほかならない)

How to decide: words like 「ただの」, 「単(たん)なる」 or 「一部(いちぶ)」 in the sentence → に過(す)ぎない; the sentence names the real cause or essence → にほかならない. More in Lesson 61.

わけがない vs はずがない vs わけではない

Expression Meaning Feel
わけがない there's no way rules it out flatly (against common sense, or an emotional "no way!"); usually the stronger
はずがない there's no way ruled out by what I know, or by the evidence
わけではない it's not that ~ a partial denial, not "impossible"
  • ⭕ 三(さん)歳(さい)の子(こ)どもが新聞(しんぶん)を読(よ)めるわけがない。(There's no way a three-year-old can read a newspaper.)
  • ⭕ 肉(にく)が嫌(きら)いなわけではないが、あまり食(た)べない。(It's not that I dislike meat; I just don't eat much of it.)
  • ❌ 肉(にく)が嫌(きら)いなわけがないが、あまり食(た)べない。("There's no way I dislike it" doesn't fit the second half)

How to decide: in the exam わけがない and はずがない are mostly interchangeable (calm inference from concrete grounds leans はず; a strong, emotional denial leans わけ); the one to separate out is わけではない, which only rejects a conclusion the listener might draw. More in Lesson 64 and はず vs わけ.

だけに vs だけあって vs ばかりに

Expression Meaning Second half
だけあって as you'd expect of ~ praise only
だけに precisely because ~ (all the more) good or bad
ばかりに just because ~ (regret) bad result only
  • ⭕ 一流(いちりゅう)ホテルだけあって、サービスがいい。(As you'd expect of a top hotel, the service is good.)
  • ⭕ 一流(いちりゅう)ホテルだけに、値段(ねだん)も高(たか)い。(Being a top hotel, it's expensive too.)
  • ❌ 一流(いちりゅう)ホテルだけあって、サービスが悪(わる)い。(だけあって can't introduce something negative)
  • ❌ 早起(はやお)きしたばかりに、いい席(せき)が取(と)れた。(ばかりに can't lead to a good result; use 「早起(はやお)きしたおかげで」)

How to decide: check whether the second half is good or bad first — a bad result with regret → ばかりに; praise → だけあって; "all the more so because" → だけに. More in Lesson 60.

末に vs あげく

Both mean "after a lot of ~, in the end", and they attach the same way (Verb ta-form / Noun + の). The difference is the outcome: 末(すえ)に can go either way and often marks a considered decision; あげく usually leads to wasted effort or a bad result.

  • ⭕ 悩(なや)んだ末(すえ)に、留学(りゅうがく)することにした。(After agonising over it for a long time, I decided to study abroad.)
  • ⭕ 二(に)時間(じかん)も待(ま)たされたあげく、結局(けっきょく)会(あ)えなかった。(After being kept waiting two whole hours, I didn't get to see them in the end.)
  • ❌ 悩(なや)んだあげく、すばらしい答(こた)えにたどり着(つ)いた。(あげく doesn't normally lead to a good result)

How to decide: a satisfying, positive outcome → 末(すえ)に; wasted effort or an unwelcome outcome → あげく. More in Lesson 69 and Lesson 71.

に限る vs に限って vs に限らず

Expression Meaning Position
に限(かぎ)る ~ is best ends the sentence
に限(かぎ)って of all times / of all people mid-sentence, usually followed by bad luck
に限(かぎ)らず not only ~ mid-sentence, often followed by 「も」
  • ⭕ 暑(あつ)い日(ひ)は冷(つめ)たいビールに限(かぎ)る。(On a hot day, nothing beats a cold beer.)
  • ⭕ 急(いそ)いでいる時(とき)に限(かぎ)って、電車(でんしゃ)が遅(おく)れる。(The train is always late on the one day I'm in a hurry.)
  • ⭕ この店(みせ)は若者(わかもの)に限(かぎ)らず、お年寄(としよ)りにも人気(にんき)がある。(This shop is popular not only with young people but with older people too.)
  • ❌ 急(いそ)いでいる時(とき)に限(かぎ)る、電車(でんしゃ)が遅(おく)れる。(に限(かぎ)る can't sit in the middle of a sentence)

How to decide: at the end of the sentence → に限(かぎ)る; mid-sentence with bad luck → に限(かぎ)って; mid-sentence widening the scope (も) → に限(かぎ)らず. More in Lesson 61 and Lesson 41.

からといって vs からには

Both start with 「から」 but go opposite ways: からといって says "A doesn't justify B" (a negative follows); からには says "now that A, we should B" (resolve or obligation follows).

  • ⭕ 日本(にほん)に住(す)んでいるからといって、日本語(にほんご)が上手(じょうず)だとは限(かぎ)らない。(Living in Japan doesn't necessarily mean your Japanese is good.)
  • ⭕ 日本(にほん)に住(す)むからには、日本語(にほんご)をしっかり勉強(べんきょう)したい。(Since I'm going to live in Japan, I want to study Japanese properly.)
  • ❌ 日本(にほん)に住(す)んでいるからといって、日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)するべきだ。(からといって needs a negative after it)

How to decide: a negative ending such as 「とは限(かぎ)らない」, 「わけではない」 or 「〜な」 → からといって; an ending like 「べきだ」, 「つもりだ」, 「〜たい」 or 「〜しなさい」 → からには. More in Lesson 59 and Lesson 37.

ないわけにはいかない vs ざるを得ない vs わけにはいかない

Expression Meaning Feel
ないわけにはいかない can't not ~ = must duty, courtesy, social norms
ざるを得(え)ない have no choice but to ~ forced by circumstances
わけにはいかない can't ~ not acceptable to do (single negative)
  • ⭕ 上司(じょうし)に誘(さそ)われたら、行(い)かないわけにはいかない。(If your boss invites you, you can't not go.)
  • ⭕ 電車(でんしゃ)が止(と)まったので、タクシーで帰(かえ)らざるを得(え)なかった。(The trains stopped, so I had no choice but to take a taxi home.)
  • ⭕ 明日(あした)は試験(しけん)だから、遊(あそ)びに行(い)くわけにはいかない。(I have an exam tomorrow, so I can't go out.)
  • ❌ 試合(しあい)は中止(ちゅうし)しざるを得(え)ない。(する becomes 「せざるを得(え)ない」)

How to decide: count the negatives — 「ない + わけにはいかない」 is a double negative meaning "must", while 「わけにはいかない」 alone means "can't"; for ざるを得(え)ない, remember する → せざる. More in Lesson 64 and Lesson 44.

ものなら vs ようものなら

One 「よう」 makes all the difference: potential form + ものなら means "if only I could ~ (unlikely, but I wish)", volitional form + ものなら means "if you dare ~, (something bad will happen)".

  • ⭕ 戻(もど)れるものなら、学生(がくせい)時代(じだい)に戻(もど)りたい。(If I could go back, I'd go back to my student days.)
  • ⭕ 授業(じゅぎょう)中(ちゅう)にスマホを見(み)ようものなら、すぐ取(と)り上(あ)げられる。(If you dare look at your phone in class, it gets confiscated on the spot.)
  • ❌ 戻(もど)ろうものなら、学生(がくせい)時代(じだい)に戻(もど)りたい。(a wish needs the potential form)

How to decide: potential form (〜れる / 〜える) before it and 「〜たい」 after → ものなら; volitional form (〜よう / 〜おう) before it and a bad consequence after → ようものなら. More in Lesson 70.

につれて vs にしたがって vs に伴って

Expression "As ~" Also
につれて ⭕ natural, parallel change that's its only meaning
にしたがって ⭕ can also mean "following (instructions, rules)"
に伴(ともな)って ⭕ written, often cause and effect can modify a noun: に伴(ともな)う + Noun
  • ⭕ 年(とし)を取(と)るにつれて、体力(たいりょく)が落(お)ちる。(As you get older, your stamina drops.)
  • ⭕ 係員(かかりいん)の指示(しじ)にしたがって、避難(ひなん)してください。(Please evacuate following the staff's instructions.)
  • ⭕ 円(えん)安(やす)に伴(ともな)って、海外(かいがい)からの観光(かんこう)客(きゃく)が増(ふ)えた。(Along with the weak yen, the number of overseas tourists has grown.)
  • ❌ 係員(かかりいん)の指示(しじ)につれて、避難(ひなん)してください。(につれて can't mean "following instructions")

How to decide: instructions, rules or laws before it → only にしたがって; for "as ~" changes all three mostly work, and cause and effect in news or reports → に伴(ともな)って. More in Lesson 66 and Lesson 46.

かねない vs かねる

Both follow the masu-stem and look like a positive/negative pair, but they are two separate patterns: かねる = "can't bring myself to / unable to" (a polite refusal), かねない = "could well (lead to something bad)".

  • ⭕ その意見(いけん)には賛成(さんせい)しかねます。(I'm afraid I can't agree with that view.)
  • ⭕ 寝不足(ねぶそく)は事故(じこ)につながりかねない。(Lack of sleep could well lead to an accident.)
  • ❌ 寝不足(ねぶそく)は事故(じこ)につながりかねる。(the meaning here is "could happen", so it needs かねない)

How to decide: the speaker finds it hard or declines to do something (common in service Japanese as 「〜かねます」) → かねる; describing a bad outcome that might happen → かねない. More in Lesson 44.

Exam Tips

  1. Check the conjugation before the meaning. In the first grammar section (multiple choice), the form before the blank rules out many options at once: 「名詞(めいし)の」 before the blank rules out patterns that only take verbs; a masu-stem (「なり」, 「し」) points to かねない / かねる / つつ / 抜(ぬ)く; a ta-form points to 末(すえ)に / あげく / ところで / きり.
  2. Check what the second half allows. からといって and ないことには need a negative after them; ばかりに, あげく, ようものなら and かねない lead to bad outcomes; だけあって, にかけては and だけのことはある lead to praise. When every option seems to make sense, the second half settles it.
  3. Match the register. のみならず, にほかならない, に相違(そうい)ない and ざるを得(え)ない are written-style; in casual dialogue ending in 「〜よ」, 「〜ね」 or 「〜ちゃった」 they are rarely the answer.
  4. Identify look-alike opposites first. に過(す)ぎない / にほかならない, かねる / かねない, に限(かぎ)る / に限(かぎ)って, ものなら / ようものなら, どころか / どころではない — sort out which one you're looking at before reading the sentence; many questions exist only to test this.
  5. ★ ordering: build the fixed chunks first. Put together the pieces that obviously belong together (「〜ないわけにはいかない」, 「〜に越(こ)したことはない」, 「〜をめぐって」, 「〜という」), then place the rest. Only once the whole sentence reads smoothly, count which slot the ★ is in — don't guess as you go.
  6. Text grammar: follow the logic of the passage. A blank at the start of a sentence is usually a conjunction: adding in the same direction → しかも; contrary to expectation → それなのに; drawing a conclusion → したがって; restating → すなわち. Also check which earlier sentence a この / その points back to.
  7. Watch the clock. Budget roughly 15–20 minutes for N2 grammar; if a question still has you stuck after a minute, pick one, mark it and move on, saving time for reading. Time allocation is in the December JLPT exam guide.
  8. Take mistakes back to the lesson. When you miss a question in the N2 practice questions, open the lesson and read its Comparison section — that does more than ten new questions.

Answers

Show answers
  1. c. 末(すえ)に — many failures, then success: a long, hard process with a good result; あげく normally leads to a bad one.
  2. a. からといって — 「わけではない」 follows: "being a child doesn't mean anything goes".
  3. d. に限(かぎ)って — mid-sentence with bad luck = "of all times"; に限(かぎ)る only ends a sentence.
  4. b. 過(す)ぎない — 「単(たん)なる」 plays it down, so に過(す)ぎない.
  5. c. ないことには — "unless we get approval, we can't proceed"; a negative follows.
  6. b. かねない — describes a bad outcome that might happen; かねる means "unable to bring oneself to".
  7. d. どころか — "far from going down, the fever went up": the two halves point opposite ways; ばかりか adds in the same direction.
  8. a. だけに — "precisely because expectations were high, it hit all the harder": the result is negative, so だけあって won't work.
  9. c. わけがない — "my stubborn father would never change his mind"; わけではない is a partial denial and doesn't fit.
  10. d. を問(と)わず — "regardless of age or experience"; it often follows a pair of conditions.
