と (to), ば (ba), たら (tara) and なら (nara) can all be translated as "if", but they differ in whether a request can follow, whether they describe a rule or a single occasion, and how they order events in time. This page reorganises Lesson 09 and Lesson 10: a one-line answer and a comparison table first, then seven typical situations side by side, and finally a decision flow and a 10-question self-test.
The Short Answer
- と: once A happens, B automatically follows — natural laws, machines, habits, directions. It cannot be followed by a request, an intention or a command.
- ば: as long as condition A is met, B holds — the focus is on what condition is needed; common in general truths, proverbs and 〜ばいい.
- たら: once A has happened (or if A happens), B — usually one specific occasion; anything can follow it, making it the most versatile.
- なら: if (it's the case that) A — picks up a topic from the other person to give advice or a judgment; B can even happen before A.
When unsure: たら is the safest; advice on a topic someone raised → なら; a rule → と; "as long as…"

Situation by Situation
(Turn the knob to the right and the volume goes up.)
(When winter comes, this lake freezes.)
(Whenever my father drinks, his face turns red right away.)
(Turn right at the second traffic light and you'll find the post office.)
→ The second half of と is a result that simply follows, not anyone's decision. Rule-type sentences can often use ば too (冬になれば凍ります), but と is the most typical.
场景 2:后面是请求、邀请、意志 → たら(と 不行,ば 有条件)Situation 2: A request, invitation or intention follows → たら (not と; ば only sometimes)
(Once work is over, let's go for a drink.)
(If anything happens, let me know right away.)
(If you have time, please give me a hand. → the first half is the state ある, so ば is fine)
(と cannot be followed by an invitation)
→ The limit on ば: when the first half is an action (行く・着く・卒業する) and the second half is a request or intention, ば often sounds unnatural — especially when the same person does both. When the first half is a state (ある・いる, adjectives, potential forms, 〜ない), it's fine.
Situation 3: "When / after A", where A is sure to happen → たら
(When it's ten o'clock, let's set off.)
(When I grow up, I want to be a pilot.)
(Brush your teeth after you eat.)
(I'll text you when I get to the station.)
→ Here たら really means "when / after", and A is certain to happen — it isn't a hypothesis. To say "once A has happened, do B", たら is the only choice.
Situation 4: "As long as…", what condition is needed → ば
(As long as you practise every day, anyone can get good.)
(If you take this medicine, your fever will come down.)
(If the weather is good, you can see Mt. Fuji from here.)
(What should I do?)
→ ば puts the spotlight on the condition itself: meet it, and the result holds. 〜ばいい ("all you need to do is…") and 〜ば〜ほど ("the more…, the more…") are common partners, as in 練習すればするほど上手になる (the more you practise, the better you get).
Situation 5: Picking up a topic and giving advice → なら
(I'd like to see a movie this weekend…)
(If it's a movie you want, the cinema by the station is cheap.)
(If you're tired, don't push yourself — get some rest. → advice based on the other person's state)
(If you're not going, please tell me soon.)
→ The premise of なら usually comes from what the other person said or from the situation at hand: "if, as you say, …" / "if it's … we're talking about". In speech, noun + だったら can do the same job (映画だったら…), but なら is the classic choice.
B can come before A
→ たら 一定是 A 先 B 后;なら 只是"以 A 为前提",B 可以发生在 A 之前。
(If you're going on a trip, you'd better buy a guidebook first. → buy the book, then travel)
(When I go on the trip, I want to take lots of photos. → taken once there)
(If you've been drinking, don't drive; if you're going to drive, don't drink. → a well-known Japanese road-safety slogan)
→ With たら, A always comes first and B after. なら only says "taking A as given", so B can happen before A.
场景 7:过去的发现、结果 → たら/と(ば・なら 不行)Situation 7: Past discoveries and outcomes → たら / と (not ば or なら)
(When I got to the station, the train had already left.)
(When I went outside, it was snowing.)
(I called the shop, and it turned out to be closed today.)
(I wish I had studied more back then. → about the past, ば is basically limited to the regret pattern 〜ばよかった)
→ When the second half is in the past and describes something found or an unexpected outcome (not a deliberate action of yours), use たら or と; と has a more narrative feel, たら is more conversational.
Decision Flow
- Is it about something that already happened (a discovery, an unexpected outcome)? → たら or と (for regret, 〜ばよかった)
- Are you picking up the other person's topic to give advice, or does B have to happen before A?
- "Once A has happened, B", with A certain to happen? → たら
- Is the second half a request, invitation, command or your own plan? → たら (なら for topic-based advice; ば if the first half is a state) — never と
- Is it a rule that holds every time — nature, machines, habits, directions? → と (ば also works)
- Are you stressing "as long as this condition is met", or asking "what do I need to do…"?
- Still unsure? → たら is the least likely to be wrong
