📅 Updated · ⏱ 32 min read

A few weeks to the exam and no time to go back through all ~150 N3 grammar points? This page keeps only the ones that come up most and get confused most: 40 high-frequency points grouped by function (each with conjugation, meaning and an example, linked to its lesson), then 10 of the most confused groups, exam tips for the N3 grammar questions, and a 10-question self-test to finish.

To tick points off one by one, use the N3 grammar list; for every lesson, see the N3 overview; for questions, try the N3 practice questions (and the N3 mock test).

Exam Tips

The N3 grammar part has three question types: sentence grammar 1 (文(ぶん)の文法(ぶんぽう)1, choose the grammar to fill the blank), sentence grammar 2 (文(ぶん)の文法(ぶんぽう)2, ★ ordering) and text grammar (文章(ぶんしょう)の文法(ぶんぽう), blanks in a short passage). Grammar and reading share one 70-minute sitting, so try to finish grammar within about 20 minutes and save the rest for reading.

  1. Check the form first to eliminate options. Many questions lose half their options on the preceding form alone: たとたん only follows the た-form; 次第(しだい), がち, つつある and かねない follow the ます-stem; 一方(いっぽう)だ and おそれがある follow the dictionary form; ざるを得(え)ない follows the ない-stem (する → せざる).
  2. Then ask whether the second half can be the speaker's own will. After たとたん it can't be something you do on purpose; after 次第(しだい) it's exactly that. When the second half is an order, request or resolve, からには and 以上(いじょう) are likely.
  3. Check whether the result is good or bad. おかげで vs せいで, and おそれがある, かねない, がちだ (bad things only) — when one option is positive and one negative, that's usually where the answer is.
  4. Watch the register. Notices, news and business emails favour 際(さい), 次第(しだい), において, にもかかわらず; chat between friends favours っぽい, に決(き)まっている, くせに. The setting of the question tells you which to pick.
  5. ★ ordering: build chunks, then place them. First join the pieces that must go together (〜た + とたん, 〜に + 対(たい)して, noun + の + せいで), then see which word after the blank the chunk must sit in front of, then order the rest. Read the whole sentence once more before marking the piece in the ★ slot.
  6. Text grammar: follow the logic between sentences. Whether the blank links cause and effect, a contrast or an example decides between そのため, ところが and つまり; also keep the sentence endings in the same style as the passage (です・ます or だ・である).
  7. Calibrate your timing with practice tests. Drill your weak lessons in the N3 practice questions, then take the N3 mock test under strict timing and see how many minutes grammar really takes. Exam date and pass marks: the December 2026 JLPT guide.

Answers

Show answers
  1. c. とたん — the rain started the moment I left: an unexpected event. 次第(しだい) needs an action you'll do yourself, and follows the ます-stem.
  2. a. 次第 — it follows the ます-stem 届(とど)き, and the second half is the speaker's own action (お送(おく)りします).
  3. a. おかげで — a good result (the work finished early), with gratitude.
  4. b. からには — now that I've taken it on, followed by a resolve (やるつもりだ).
  5. c. くせに — he knows nothing yet talks like an expert: criticism of someone else.
  6. b. つつある — 減(へ)り is the ます-stem, which takes つつある. 一方(いっぽう)だ needs the dictionary form (減(へ)る一方(いっぽう)だ); そうもない means "unlikely to…", which contradicts 年々(ねんねん) (year after year).
  7. a. おそれがある — a risk of something bad, after the dictionary form あふれる; the language of news and forecasts. かねる follows the ます-stem and means "can't"; 一方(いっぽう)だ describes a one-way change already under way, not a risk.
  8. a. どころか — far from resting, there's not even time for lunch: the two halves point in opposite directions. ばかりか adds something in the same direction.
  9. c. わけにはいかない — it's an important meeting, so out of responsibility I can't take the day off. ざるを得(え)ない would need the ない-stem (休(やす)まざるを得(え)ない) and would mean the opposite: "have no choice but to stay home".
  10. a. にしては — surprising for someone who is only in primary school.
