17. N1 Exam Strategy Tips
Grammar Section Strategy
1. Know the three question types
- Selecting grammar forms (文法形式の判断): pick the right form for a blank in a sentence — meaning, connection and what can follow are all tested
- Sentence composition (文の組み立て): put four options in order and give the one at ★
- Text grammar (文章の文法): fill blanks in a passage, judging from the surrounding context
2. Look at the main clause first — it rules out half the options
- No volition, commands or requests after: が早いか, や否や, なり, はおろか, とあって, をよそに, と相まって, にひきかえ
- The speaker's own intention (「〜したい」, 「〜します」) is fine after these, but not a request, command or invitation: べく, んがため, ながらも
- Volition or requests allowed after: 次第, とあれば, ないまでも, はもとより, にせよ
- Must be followed by something forward-looking — advice, a command, an intention: なり〜なり
- Must be followed by a negative: たりとも, をおいて, なしには, ことなしには, なくして(は)
3. Then check the connection — classical conjugations are the commonest trap
4. Memorise the fixed collocations
- 想像にかたくない, 言うまでもない, 取るに足りない, 見るに堪えない, 感謝に堪えない
- 望むべくもない, 欠くべからざる, 割れんばかりの拍手, 何人たりとも
- 涙ながらに, 昔ながらの, 行きつ戻りつ, 持ちつ持たれつ, 黒ずくめ, 汗まみれ, 家族ぐるみ, 春めく
- 光栄の至り, 若気の至り, 声を限りに, ご心配には及びません
5. Check the direction of the judgement and the person
- Essentially positive only: ならでは, をおいて, あっての, に足る
- Mostly negative: 極まりない, まみれ, はおろか, に限ったことではない, ようでは, たら最後, 「会社ぐるみ」
- Criticising others: ともあろう者が, にかこつけて, てはばからない
- The speaker's own feelings: 限りだ, を禁じ得ない; third person: なり, とばかりに
6. Sentence composition (★) questions
- First find the N1 pattern's "fixed partner" and join them: 「をおいて」 → 「ほかに〜ない」; 「はおろか」 → 「〜も/さえ」; 「ないまでも」 → 「せめて〜」; 「(よ)うにも」 → the same verb's potential negative; 「Aといい」 → 「Bといい」; 「一 + counter」 → 「たりとも」 → negative
- Once that chunk is in place, the remaining options usually fit only one way
7. Text grammar
- Editorials and commentary favour written judgements: てしかるべきだ, を余儀なくされる, にかたくない, でなくてなんだろう, に即して
- Read the whole paragraph first and decide whether the writer is criticising, speculating or marvelling before choosing the sentence ending
8. Time management
- N1 vocabulary, grammar and reading are one 110-minute sitting, with reading taking the biggest share; aim for roughly 15–20 minutes on grammar (a starting point only — calibrate with practice tests)
- If a question gives you nothing after a minute, pick one, mark it and move on
- To pass you need 100 overall and at least the 19-point minimum in every section
9. Top 10 easily confused sets

Answers
- b (the subjects differ, so なり can't be used; 次第 needs the masu-stem; そばから is for repeated actions)
- a (the main clause is the speaker's own planned action, "I will contact you," so が早いか, や否や and なり are ruled out)
- b (the main clause is an invitation; はおろか can't take volition, and にとどまらず normally doesn't either)
- a (it's someone else's worry; をものともせず is for hardship or injury)
- a (the main clause says the outcome is decided by it)
- b (the main clause is a fact observed today; ともなると states a general tendency, not what is happening on one particular day)
- b (a norm for the role, with 「なければならない」 after it)
- b (too minor to need it)
- a (verbs of praying or wishing + てやまない)
- b (na-adjective stem + 極まりない)
- b (a verb masu-stem comes before it, and かたがた takes nouns only)
- a (the set phrase 「割れんばかりの拍手」)
- a (wanting to but being unable to)
- b (「一」 + counter + たりとも + negative)
- 満点は取れないまでも、合格はしたい。
- 皆さんのご協力なくしては、このプロジェクトの成功はあり得ない。
- 首相ともあろう人が、あんなことを言うとは。
- 合格するために、毎日勉強しなさい。(べく can't be followed by a command)
- 日本に来てから、一度富士山に登った。(てからというもの needs a lasting state or change after it)
- 夜中に一人で山に登るなんて、危険極まりない。(極まりない attaches directly only to a na-adjective stem; 「危ないこと極まりない」 also works)
