JLPT N5 Key Grammar — The Points That Come Up Most

📅 Updated · ⏱ 20 min read

A few weeks before the N5 and no time to go through all 70-odd grammar points again? This page picks only the 30 that keep coming up in the test and that learners get wrong most: grouped by function (particles, time and sequence, requests and obligation, wants and invitations, experience, comparison, reasons and conditions), each with its conjugation, meaning and one short example, linked to the lesson that teaches it. After that come the 10 most confused pairs, tips for the N5 grammar questions, and a 10-question self-test.

The points marked N4 preview (〜すぎる, 〜かもしれない, 〜たら, dictionary form + ことがある, と・ば・たら・なら, and both kinds of そうだ) are N4 grammar on most JLPT lists; this site teaches them early, in the N5 lessons. The N5 may not test them, the N4 certainly will — if time is short, get the rest solid first.

For the complete list, see the N5 grammar checklist; to review lesson by lesson, the N5 overview; to go straight to questions, the N5 practice questions.

  • ⭕ 誰(だれ)が来(き)ましたか。 ❌ 誰(だれ)は来(き)ましたか。

  • ⭕ 私(わたし)は学生(がくせい)です。(I'm a student. → introducing a topic)

How to decide: a question-word subject or the inside of a clause → が; "as for X…" with the point coming after → は. More in は vs が.

2. に vs で

  • ⭕ 東京(とうきょう)に住(す)んでいます。 ❌ 東京(とうきょう)で住(す)んでいます。
  • ⭕ 会社(かいしゃ)で働(はたら)いています。 ❌ 会社(かいしゃ)に働(はたら)いています。

How to decide: a point where something is or arrives → に; the place where you do something → で. More in に vs で.

3. 〜前に vs 〜後で

  • ⭕ 食(た)べる前(まえ)に、手(て)を洗(あら)います。 ❌ 食(た)べた前(まえ)に
  • ⭕ 食(た)べた後(あと)で、歯(は)を磨(みが)きます。 ❌ 食(た)べる後(あと)で

How to decide: 前(まえ)に takes the dictionary form, 後(あと)で takes the た-form — the verb form before the blank usually gives the answer away. See Lesson 15.

4. 〜ないで vs 〜なくて

  • ⭕ 朝(あさ)ご飯(はん)を食(た)べないで、学校(がっこう)に行(い)った。(I went to school without eating breakfast.)
  • ⭕ 時間(じかん)がなくて、行(い)けなかった。(I couldn't go because I had no time.) ❌ 時間(じかん)がないで、行(い)けなかった。

How to decide: "did B without doing A" → ないで; "because (I) didn't / there wasn't …" → なくて. See Lesson 06.

5. 〜たことがある vs 〜ことがある

  • 日本(にほん)へ行(い)ったことがあります。(I've been to Japan. → experience)
  • バスが遅(おく)れることがあります。(The bus is sometimes late. → it happens now and then)

How to decide: た-form + ことがある = "have done … before"; dictionary form + ことがある = "sometimes …" (this use is an N4 preview). See Lesson 07 and Lesson 15.

6. 〜から vs 〜ので

  • ⭕ 静(しず)かなので、よく眠(ねむ)れます。 ❌ 静(しず)かので

How to decide: nouns and な-adjectives need な before ので; a polite reason or asking permission → ので; a personal reason in casual speech → から. More in から vs ので.

  • ❌ 駅(えき)に着(つ)くと、電話(でんわ)してください。 ⭕ 駅(えき)に着(つ)いたら、電話(でんわ)してください。
  • ⭕ 春(はる)になると、桜(さくら)が咲(さ)きます。(When spring comes, the cherry trees bloom. → a natural law)
  • ⭕ A:日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)したいです。 B:日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)するなら、この本(ほん)がいいですよ。(→ picking up what the other person said to give advice)

How to decide: a request or intention afterwards → never と; natural laws and inevitable results → と; advice on what the other person just said → なら; not sure → たら. This set is an N4 preview; more in と, ば, たら, なら.

8. そうだ (appearance) vs そうだ (hearsay)

  • おいしそうです (looks tasty) vs おいしいそうです (I hear it's tasty)
  • ⭕ よさそう (looks good) ❌ いいそう (in the "looks" sense)

9. 〜たい vs 〜たがる vs 〜ほしい

  • ⭕ 私(わたし)は日本(にほん)に行(い)きたいです。
  • ⭕ 妹(いもうと)は一緒(いっしょ)に行(い)きたがっています。 ❌ 妹(いもうと)は一緒(いっしょ)に行(い)きたいです。(don't use たい for someone else's wish)
  • ⭕ 車(くるま)がほしいです。 ❌ 車(くるま)を買(か)いほしいです。(wanting to do something takes たい)

How to decide: about yourself → たい/ほしい, about someone else → たがる; wanting a thing → がほしい, wanting to do something → たい. See Lesson 12.

10. だけ vs しか〜ない

  • 1000円(えん)だけあります。(I have just 1,000 yen. → a neutral statement)
  • 1000円(えん)しかありません。(I only have 1,000 yen. → it feels too little) ❌ 1000円(えん)しかあります。

How to decide: しか always takes a negative and sounds like "not enough"; だけ works with either and is neutral. See Lesson 17.

Exam Tips

  1. Look at the form right before the blank first. Many N5 questions are really testing conjugation: is it the dictionary form or the た-form (前(まえ)に / 後(あと)で), the て-form (てから, てください), or the ます-stem (ながら, たい, そうだ)? Once the form matches, usually only one option is left.
  2. For particles, work back from the verb. 住(す)む → に, 働(はたら)く → で, 会(あ)う → に, 行(い)く → へ/に; a question-word subject → が. Find the verb first, then decide the particle in front of it.
  3. A negative at the end of the sentence should make you think of three things: しか〜ない, question word + も + negative (誰(だれ)も来(こ)なかった), and AはBほど〜ない. The other way round: if しか is an option but the sentence ends in a positive, rule it out.
  4. Whatever modifies a noun is in plain form. ⭕ 昨日(きのう)買(か)った本(ほん) ❌ 昨日(きのう)買(か)いました本(ほん). An option with a ます-form right before a noun is almost always wrong.
  5. ★ ordering questions: first join the pieces that must go together (noun + の + noun, verb + noun, て-form + から), build the whole sentence, read it through once to check it flows, and only then fill in the number in the ★ slot.
  6. Text grammar (文章(ぶんしょう)の文法(ぶんぽう)): choose the connector from how the two sentences relate (そして, それから, でも, だから), and keep the sentence ending consistent with the text — if the passage is in です/ます, the answer won't suddenly switch to plain form.
  7. When unsure about a conditional, pick たら. It's the most versatile; the one sure rule is that と can't be followed by a request or intention.
  8. Timing: at N5, grammar and reading share one 40-minute section — move quickly through grammar (about 15 minutes at most) and save the time for reading. Dates and pass marks are in the December 2026 JLPT exam guide.

  2. で — the library is where the action of studying happens.
  3. ないで — ない-form + でください = please don't.
  4. こと — た-form + ことがある = experience.
  5. が — 〜の中(なか)で〜が一番(いちばん)〜.
  6. ながら — ます-stem + ながら, two things at once.

  9. しか — the sentence ends in a negative: "only 500 yen". (も is grammatical too, but means "not even 500 yen".)
