Parallel & Accompanying Actions — かたがた/がてら/かたわら/つ〜つ/なりに/とばかりに

📅 Updated · ⏱ 32 min read

This lesson covers grammar for one thing happening alongside another. 「かたがた」 and 「がてら」 both mean one action serving two purposes; they differ in register and form — the first is the formal word of business letters, the second everyday language. 「かたわら」 means doing something else on the side, over a long period, alongside one's main work, and is common in profiles of people. 「つ〜つ」 appears in set phrases such as 「行(い)きつ戻(もど)りつ」 and 「持(も)ちつ持(も)たれつ」 for two actions alternating back and forth. 「なりに/なりの」 means "in its own way, within its limits", and 「とばかりに」 describes someone's manner "as if to say…". 「かたがた」 and 「かたわら」 look alike but mean different things — a long-standing trap on the N1 grammar section.

1. 〜かたがた ~katagata (While also… / Combining… with…)

Conjugation

  • Noun + かたがた

※ It takes almost only a handful of action nouns: 「お礼(れい)」, 「お詫(わ)び」, 「ご挨拶(あいさつ)」, 「ご報告(ほうこく)」, 「お見舞(みま)い」, 「お祝(いわ)い」, 「散歩(さんぽ)」, 「見物(けんぶつ)」. The letter closing 「まずは略儀(りゃくぎ)ながら書中(しょちゅう)にてお礼(れい)かたがたご挨拶(あいさつ)申(もう)し上(あ)げます」 is a set phrase.

Meaning

"While also…" or "combining… with…". Doing B also serves the purpose A — 「Aを兼(か)ねてBする」. A is one of the purposes; B is what one actually does.

Restrictions:

  • Nouns only, no verbs: ❌ 「お礼(れい)を言(い)いかたがた伺(うかが)います」 → ⭕ 「お礼(れい)かたがた伺(うかが)います」.
  • The main clause is usually a verb of visiting or going (「伺(うかが)う」, 「訪(たず)ねる」, 「参(まい)る」) or letter language (「ご挨拶(あいさつ)申(もう)し上(あ)げます」, 「ご案内(あんない)いたします」).
  • Very formal — business, letters, speeches. For everyday errands use 「〜がてら」 or 「ついでに」: △ 「散歩(さんぽ)かたがたコンビニに行(い)った」 isn't wrong, but it is far too formal for the situation.

Example Sentences

  1. 先日(せんじつ)のお礼(れい)かたがた、近(ちか)いうちにご挨拶(あいさつ)に伺(うかが)いたいと存(ぞん)じます。(I would like to call on you soon, partly to thank you for the other day.)
  2. 就職(しゅうしょく)のご報告(ほうこく)かたがた、大学(だいがく)時代(じだい)の恩師(おんし)を訪(たず)ねた。(I visited my old university professor, partly to let him know I had found a job.)
  3. 入院(にゅういん)中(ちゅう)の祖母(そぼ)のお見舞(みま)いかたがた、三(さん)年(ねん)ぶりに帰省(きせい)した。(I went home for the first time in three years, which also gave me a chance to visit my grandmother in hospital.)
  4. 新年(しんねん)のご挨拶(あいさつ)かたがた、新(しん)製品(せいひん)のご案内(あんない)をお送(おく)りいたします。(Along with our New Year's greetings, we are pleased to send you information on our new products.)
  5. まずは略儀(りゃくぎ)ながら書中(しょちゅう)にてお礼(れい)かたがたご挨拶(あいさつ)申(もう)し上(あ)げます。(Please forgive the informality of a letter; I write to thank you and to send my regards.)

2. 〜がてら ~ga tera (While… / On the way… / As a chance to…)

Conjugation

  • Noun + がてら
  • Verb masu-stem + がてら

※ Typical nouns: 「散歩(さんぽ)」, 「運動(うんどう)」, 「買(か)い物(もの)」, 「下見(したみ)」, 「気分(きぶん)転換(てんかん)」. Much more casual than 「かたがた」 — common in speech and personal essays.

Meaning

"While…", "on the way…" or "as a chance to…". Like 「かたがた」, it is 「Aを兼(か)ねてBする」: doing B also takes care of A, as in taking a walk and doing the shopping in one go.

Restrictions:

  • The main clause is usually a verb of movement: 「行(い)く」, 「歩(ある)く」, 「寄(よ)る」, 「出(で)かける」, 「回(まわ)る」.
  • It doesn't mean two actions happening at the same time: ❌ 「音楽(おんがく)を聞(き)きがてら勉強(べんきょう)する」 → ⭕ 「音楽(おんがく)を聞(き)きながら勉強(べんきょう)する」.
  • For a single outing or a short time, not long-term work (that is 「かたわら」): ❌ 「会社(かいしゃ)に勤(つと)めがてら小説(しょうせつ)を書(か)いている」.

Example Sentences

  1. 散歩(さんぽ)がてら、駅前(えきまえ)のパン屋(や)まで朝食(ちょうしょく)を買(か)いに行(い)った。(I took a walk to the bakery by the station to buy breakfast.)
  2. 天気(てんき)がよかったので、運動(うんどう)がてら一(ひと)駅(えき)手前(てまえ)で降(お)りて家(いえ)まで歩(ある)いた。(The weather was nice, so I got off a stop early and walked home for the exercise.)
  3. 友人(ゆうじん)を空港(くうこう)まで送(おく)りがてら、展望(てんぼう)デッキで飛行機(ひこうき)を眺(なが)めてきた。(While seeing a friend off at the airport, I spent some time watching the planes from the observation deck.)
  4. 引(ひ)っ越(こ)し先(さき)の下見(したみ)がてら、週末(しゅうまつ)に新(あたら)しい街(まち)を歩(ある)き回(まわ)ってみた。(At the weekend I walked around my new neighbourhood, partly to check out the place I'm moving to.)
  5. 買(か)い物(もの)に出(で)がてら、郵便(ゆうびん)局(きょく)に寄(よ)って荷物(にもつ)を出(だ)してきた。(When I went out shopping, I dropped by the post office on the way and sent a parcel.)

Comparison

Expression Attaches to Register Difference
かたがた noun very formal; letters, business one action, two purposes; main clause is usually a visit or greeting
がてら noun / masu-stem everyday one action, two purposes; main clause is usually movement
ついでに noun + の / plain verb spoken while doing A, one also does a minor B; A is the main purpose (N3 Lesson 50)
ながら masu-stem any two actions at the same time (N5 Lesson 16)

「散歩(さんぽ)がてら郵便(ゆうびん)局(きょく)に行(い)く」= go to the post office and make a walk of it (one trip, two purposes)
「買(か)い物(もの)に行(い)ったついでに郵便(ゆうびん)局(きょく)に寄(よ)った」= I went shopping and dropped by the post office while I was out (the post office was the side errand)
「先日(せんじつ)のお礼(れい)かたがたお伺(うかが)いします」= the formal business/letter phrasing; with 「がてら」 it would sound too casual
On the test, 「お礼(れい)」, 「ご挨拶(あいさつ)」 or 「ご報告(ほうこく)」 + 「伺(うかが)う」 points to かたがた; a verb masu-stem rules かたがた out.

3. 〜かたわら ~katawara (Alongside… / While also working as…)

Conjugation

  • Noun + の + かたわら
  • Verb dictionary form + かたわら

※ Written 「傍(かたわ)ら」 in kanji. Its basic meaning is "beside" (「母(はは)のかたわらで眠(ねむ)る」 to sleep beside one's mother); here it means doing B alongside A.

Meaning

"Alongside…" or "while also…". Someone has A as their main occupation and, over a long period, also does B (a side job, a hobby, community work, another role).

Restrictions:

  • Both A and B are ongoing, long-term activities (work, study, a career), not two things done at one moment: ❌ 「テレビを見(み)るかたわら、ご飯(はん)を食(た)べた」 → ⭕ 「テレビを見(み)ながら」.
  • Both clauses are about the same person.
  • Written style, common in profiles and news reports.

Example Sentences

  1. 彼(かれ)は会社(かいしゃ)に勤(つと)めるかたわら、週末(しゅうまつ)は小説(しょうせつ)を書(か)き続(つづ)けている。(Alongside his office job, he keeps writing novels at weekends.)
  2. 彼女(かのじょ)は大学(だいがく)で教(おし)えるかたわら、翻訳(ほんやく)家(か)としても活躍(かつやく)している。(As well as teaching at a university, she is an active translator.)
  3. 祖父(そふ)は農業(のうぎょう)のかたわら、地元(じもと)の子(こ)どもたちに書道(しょどう)を教(おし)えていた。(Besides farming, my grandfather taught calligraphy to local children.)
  4. 山田(やまだ)氏(し)は本業(ほんぎょう)の弁護士(べんごし)業務(ぎょうむ)のかたわら、ボランティアで外国(がいこく)人(じん)の法律(ほうりつ)相談(そうだん)に応(おう)じている。(Alongside his main work as a lawyer, Mr Yamada gives free legal advice to foreign residents as a volunteer.)
  5. 姉(あね)は育児(いくじ)のかたわら資格(しかく)の勉強(べんきょう)を続(つづ)け、昨年(さくねん)ついに税理士(ぜいりし)の試験(しけん)に合格(ごうかく)した。(My sister kept studying for a qualification while raising her children, and last year she finally passed the tax accountant exam.)

Comparison

Expression Meaning Difference
かたわら alongside one's main work two long-term activities; written; profiles
ながら while… short or long term, the general-purpose choice: 「働(はたら)きながら大学(だいがく)に通(かよ)う」 (N5 Lesson 16)
一方(で) on the one hand… on the other contrasts two sides of one thing, or two different subjects (N2 Lesson 66)
かたがた while also / combining nouns only; a single visit; business letters

「会社(かいしゃ)に勤(つと)めるかたわら、小説(しょうせつ)を書(か)いている」⭕ (long-term: main job plus another activity)
「テレビを見(み)るかたわら、ご飯(はん)を食(た)べた」❌ → 「テレビを見(み)ながら」⭕ (two things at one moment)
「かたわら」 and 「かたがた」 both begin with 「かた」 and look alike, and N1 uses each as a distractor for the other: a long-term job points to 「かたわら」, a single visit to 「かたがた」.

4. 〜つ〜つ ~tsu ~tsu (Back and forth / Each other…)

Conjugation

  • Verb masu-stem + つ + verb masu-stem + つ

※ Two types: ① two verbs with opposite meanings: 「行(い)きつ戻(もど)りつ」, 「浮(う)きつ沈(しず)みつ」; ② one verb in the active and the passive: 「持(も)ちつ持(も)たれつ」, 「抜(ぬ)きつ抜(ぬ)かれつ」, 「追(お)いつ追(お)われつ」. Usually followed by 「〜する」, 「〜の」 + noun, or 「〜しながら」.

Meaning

"Back and forth" or "(doing and being done) to each other". Two opposite actions alternate over and over. 「つ」 is a classical auxiliary of completion that now survives only in phrases like these.

Restrictions:

  • Only a small set of fixed phrases; you can't make up your own: ❌ 「掃除(そうじ)しつ洗濯(せんたく)しつ」 → ⭕ 「掃除(そうじ)したり洗濯(せんたく)したり」.
  • The two verbs must be opposites or an active/passive pair, alternating repeatedly — not a simple list.
  • Written and descriptive, common in fiction and sports reporting.

Example Sentences

  1. 彼(かれ)は面接(めんせつ)の順番(じゅんばん)が来(く)るまで、廊下(ろうか)を行(い)きつ戻(もど)りつしていた。(Until it was his turn to be interviewed, he paced up and down the corridor.)
  2. 隣(となり)の店(みせ)とは、お客(きゃく)さんを紹介(しょうかい)し合(あ)う持(も)ちつ持(も)たれつの関係(かんけい)だ。(We and the shop next door send each other customers — we help each other out.)
  3. 二(に)台(だい)の車(くるま)は最終(さいしゅう)周(しゅう)まで抜(ぬ)きつ抜(ぬ)かれつのデッドヒートを繰(く)り広(ひろ)げた。(The two cars kept overtaking each other in a neck-and-neck race right up to the final lap.)
  4. 嵐(あらし)の海(うみ)に投(な)げ出(だ)された木(き)箱(ばこ)は、波間(なみま)に浮(う)きつ沈(しず)みつしながら流(なが)されていった。(The wooden crate thrown into the stormy sea was carried away, bobbing up and down among the waves.)
  5. 試合(しあい)は追(お)いつ追(お)われつの展開(てんかい)となり、観客(かんきゃく)は最後(さいご)まで目(め)が離(はな)せなかった。(The lead kept changing hands, and the spectators couldn't take their eyes off the game until the very end.)

Comparison

Expression Meaning Difference
〜つ〜つ back and forth; to each other fixed phrases; opposite actions alternating; written
〜たり〜たり doing things like… and… combine freely; spoken and written (N5 Lesson 7)
〜つつ(も) although… a single 「つつ」; concessive (N2 Lesson 59)
〜つつある gradually… a change in progress (N3 Lesson 42)

「廊下(ろうか)を行(い)きつ戻(もど)りつする」= 「廊下(ろうか)を行(おこな)ったり来(き)たりする」 (same meaning; the first is more literary)
「悪(わる)いと知(し)りつつ、嘘(うそ)をついた」 — that is 「つつ」, not 「つ〜つ」
N1 tests essentially these fixed phrases: learn 「行(い)きつ戻(もど)りつ」, 「持(も)ちつ持(も)たれつ」, 「抜(ぬ)きつ抜(ぬ)かれつ」, 「追(お)いつ追(お)われつ」 and 「浮(う)きつ沈(しず)みつ」.

5. 〜なりに/〜なりの ~nari ni / ~nari no (In one's own way / Within its limits)

Conjugation

  • Noun + なりに / なりの + noun
  • i-adjective plain form + なりに / なりの
  • na-adjective stem + なりに / なりの (「下手(へた)なりに」)

※ Common forms: 「私(わたし)なりに」, 「自分(じぶん)なりに」, 「それなりに」, 「子(こ)どもなりに」, 「AにはAなりの〜」. 「なりに」 modifies verbs and adjectives, 「なりの」 modifies nouns.

Meaning

"In one's own way" or "within its limits". It grants that A is limited or imperfect, but says that within those limits there is a fitting way of doing things, a reason or a value. 「AにはAなりの〜」 means "A has its own…".

Restrictions:

  • About yourself it is modest (「私(わたし)なりに頑張(がんば)りました」); about others, especially superiors, it implies limited ability and can sound rude: △ 「部長(ぶちょう)なりに努力(どりょく)されたのですね」.
  • It doesn't mean "contrary to expectations" (that is 「にしては」): ❌ 「十月(じゅうがつ)なりに暑(あつ)い」 → ⭕ 「十月(じゅうがつ)にしては暑(あつ)い」 (hot for October).

Example Sentences

  1. 経験(けいけん)は浅(あさ)いが、私(わたし)なりに精一杯(せいいっぱい)努力(どりょく)したつもりだ。(I don't have much experience, but I believe I did my best in my own way.)
  2. 子(こ)どもは子(こ)どもなりに、親(おや)に心配(しんぱい)をかけまいと気(き)を遣(つか)っているのだ。(Children, in their own way, take care not to worry their parents.)
  3. 部屋(へや)が狭(せま)いなら狭(せま)いなりに、工夫(くふう)次第(しだい)で快適(かいてき)に暮(く)らせる。(If your room is small, you can still live comfortably in it with a little ingenuity.)
  4. 彼(かれ)が会社(かいしゃ)を辞(や)めたのには、彼(かれ)なりの理由(りゆう)があったのだろう。(He must have had his own reasons for leaving the company.)
  5. 安(やす)い店(みせ)には安(やす)い店(みせ)なりの良(よ)さがあるものだ。(Cheap restaurants have their own merits.)

Comparison

Expression Meaning Difference
なりに/なりの in one's own way grants a limit, but something fitting is done within it
にしては for a… (surprisingly) reality doesn't match what one would expect of A (N3 Lesson 47)
なり (Lesson 76) the moment… dictionary form + なり; time
なり〜なり (Lesson 78) A or B, whichever examples offered as choices

「子(こ)どもなりに考(かんが)えた」= the child thought it through in a child's way (granting it's a child)
「子(こ)どもにしてはよく考(かんが)えた」= for a child, the thinking was surprisingly good (against expectations)
「それなりに」 is a common adverb: 「この店(みせ)の料理(りょうり)もそれなりにおいしい」 (the food here is decent enough, for what it is).

6. 〜とばかりに ~to bakari ni (As if to say…)

Conjugation

  • Sentence (plain / imperative / volitional form) + とばかりに
  • Set phrases: 「ここぞとばかりに」 (seizing the moment), 「待(ま)ってましたとばかりに」 (as if they'd been waiting for it)

※ What comes before is the unspoken words, and can be put in quotes: 「『もう帰(かえ)れ』とばかりに」.

Meaning

"As if to say…" or "practically saying…". The person doesn't say it aloud, but their actions or manner make the meaning 「…」 obvious. The main clause is a concrete, visible action.

Restrictions:

  • Mostly describes someone else; about the speaker it sounds odd: △ 「私(わたし)は早(はや)く帰(かえ)れとばかりに時計(とけい)を見(み)た」. The set phrase 「ここぞとばかりに」 is fine about oneself, though: ⭕ 「私(わたし)はここぞとばかりに反論(はんろん)した」.
  • The main clause is an action or attitude that actually happened, not a volition, command or request: ❌ 「待(ま)ってましたとばかりに食(た)べてください」.
  • 「と言(い)わんばかりに」 (Lesson 90) means almost the same thing.

Example Sentences

  1. 店員(てんいん)は早(はや)く帰(かえ)れとばかりに、私(わたし)たちのテーブルの周(まわ)りで片付(かたづ)けを始(はじ)めた。(As if to tell us to hurry up and leave, the staff began clearing up around our table.)

  3. 野党(やとう)は首相(しゅしょう)の失言(しつげん)を、ここぞとばかりに厳(きび)しく追及(ついきゅう)した。(The opposition seized on the prime minister's gaffe and grilled him over it.)
  4. 彼女(かのじょ)は「あなたには関係(かんけい)ない」とばかりに、ぷいと横(よこ)を向(む)いた。(She turned away in a huff, as if to say, "It's none of your business.")
  5. 犬(いぬ)は散歩(さんぽ)に連(つ)れて行(い)けとばかりに、リードをくわえて玄関(げんかん)で待(ま)っている。(The dog is waiting at the door with its lead in its mouth, as if to say, "Take me for a walk.")

Comparison

Expression Attaches to Meaning
とばかりに sentence + とばかりに one's manner as good as says those words
んばかりに (Lesson 90) nai-stem + んばかりに almost to the point of… (「泣(な)かんばかりに」)
かのように plain form + かのように as if…, contrary to fact (N3 Lesson 52)
ばかりに plain form + ばかりに just because… (leading to something bad) (N2 Lesson 60)

「出(で)ていけとばかりに、ドアを指(ゆび)さした」= pointed at the door as if to say "Get out" (a sentence comes before)
「泣(な)かんばかりに頼(たの)んだ」= begged, almost in tears (the degree of an action comes before)
「と言(い)わんばかりに」= 「とばかりに」; the two are often interchangeable
「ばかりに」 looks similar but means something else entirely: 「一言(ひとこと)多(おお)かったばかりに、彼女(かのじょ)を怒(おこ)らせてしまった」 (just because I said one word too many, I made her angry).

  3. かたがた (「お詫(わ)び」 + 「伺(うかが)います」 — formal business phrasing)
  4. なりの (a noun, 「楽(たの)しみ方(かた)」, follows, so 「なりの」)
  5. とばかりに
  6. つ / つ
  7. ながら (two actions at the same time; neither 「がてら」 nor 「かたわら」 works)
  8. なりに (a verb follows, so 「なりに」)
  9. 近況(きんきょう)のご報告(ほうこく)かたがた、先生(せんせい)をお訪(たず)ねしたいと思(おも)います。
